Stopover in Abu Dhabi

Show me...

Flanked by desert scenery, pristine beaches and cultural attractions aplenty – all within easy walking distance of each other – Abu Dhabi has all you need for a short, sunny break. Here’s why you should stopover in the UAE capital:

You can have two holidays in one

Of course there’s the argument that stopping off in Abu Dhabi will break up your long-haul journey, but in reality the reason to make a pit stop in this Middle Eastern hub is thus: you’ll get two holidays in one go. And that’s much more exciting than just spending a few hours in the airport between flights. It’s a chance to relax, rejuvenate and kick-start your tan before you’ve even reached your ultimate holiday destination.

Destinations you can stopover in Abu Dhabi on the way to include:

  • Australia
  • Mauritius
  • Seychelles
  • South Africa
  • Sri Lanka
  • Thailand
  • Singapore
  • Vietnam
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Nepal
  • India
  • Philippines

…and get to discover another culture

Abu Dhabi’s culture could not be any more different than ours – but that’s what makes it so exciting. There’s the local language, the dress, behaviour, queuing etiquette, and even the concept of time from day to day. Listen out for the five daily calls to prayer, observe rules and customs around Ramadan and learn all about the Islamic beliefs and practices. Make time to explore the Grand Mosque – one of the most impressive in the Uninted Arab Emirates – as well as discovering the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the nation’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and one of the oldest permanently inhabited settlements on the planet.

It doesn’t matter what time of year you go

Regardless of whether it’s snowing, raining or windy at home, the arid desert climate of Abu Dhabi means it is wonderfully sunny almost all year-round. No need to worry about bringing your umbrella for this destination; in fact, feel free to pack light: summer clothing is suitable regardless of the month, just be aware of local dress customs. The beautiful weather means that, no matter when you visit, you can sandboard, shop, ride rollercoasters, laze on beaches and soak up the museums and art galleries until your heart’s content.

Abu Dhabi is easy to get around

It’s easy to see the city’s highlights – from pristine beaches and modern shopping malls to world-class theme parks and myriad cultural attractions – in just two or three days. The best way to explore is by taxi or bus utilising Abu Dhabi's fantastic road network. Taxis here are very comfortable, common and won’t break the bank either, just remember to bring cash and make sure the driver switches on the meter. If you prefer to get around by bus, you’ll be happy to know that these modern vehicles are air-conditioned, so you don’t have to worry about overheating. Fares are just AED2 (40p) for a single trip in the city centre, so a much cheaper alternative than most other modes of transport.
