Northern Thailand Holidays
Comprising 17 provinces, Northern Thailand is almost a country in its own right. Just over an hour’s flight from Bangkok and boasting rolling hills, sweeping mountains, and mesmerising national parks, the pace of life is slower than elsewhere in Thailand so embrace it! Within the region, experience Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second city, which is home to more than 300 Buddhist temples, including the renowned Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. You’ll also find one of Thailand’s most iconic temples, Wat Rong Khun, in the province of Chiang Rai, around a three-hour drive from Chiang Mai. For jaw-dropping waterfalls, head to Doi Inthanon National Park which is home to the tallest mountain in Thailand and the Mae Klang Waterfall and Mae Ya Waterfall.

Where to Go in Northern Thailand
The most popular place to begin in Northern Thailand is Chiang Mai. The city is best known for its temples, as well as Bhubing Palace, the winter home of the Thai royal family. While in Chiang Mai be sure to wander around the many markets, haggle for handicrafts, meet the orange-robed monks, or hike in the hills. Other places to visit in the region include the province of Chiang Rai, which is a quieter alternative to Chiang Mai. Also in the region, Sukhothai Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site best explored by bicycle.

When to Go to Northern Thailand
Being a hilly, forested region, Northern Thailand is generally cooler than lower-lying Bangkok, where it can be pretty humid at times. While the names of Thailand’s three seasons, hot, cool and wet, speak for themselves, the cool season between November and February is the most popular time to travel, especially for Europeans and Americans escaping the cold northern hemisphere winter.
