Your Example Itinerary
Fly from the UK to Tokyo.
Explore the wonders of Tokyo and its beautiful contrasts, from the vibrant and modern Harajuku, a place obsessed with pop culture, to the ancient Meiji Jingu Shrine and old town of Asakusa. Don’t miss the famous Shibuya Crossing either – one of the busiest intersections in the world. Walk through the lively Toyosu Fish Market, learn how to make sushi, and perhaps visit the beautiful grounds of the Imperial Palace East Garden.
4* Hotel Gracery Shinjuku
Depart Tokyo by train and arrive in Tsumago, checking in to your local ryokan accommodation. Stroll through the countryside passing farms, hamlets, rice fields and waterfalls, before later enjoying a traditional kaiseki meal, learning about local Japanese customs.
Hanaya Tsumago Ryokan
Continue your journey by train to the historic city of Kanazawa, where you can learn about the ancient samurai culture with a walk through the beautifully preserved Nagamachi Samurai district. Visit the Nomura Family Samurai Residence where you’ll take in intricately painted artworks inside the house and magnificent gardens outside the house. Take in the magic of the Myoryuji Ninja Temple and perhaps try a spot of gold-leaf painting in the art and crafts district of Higashi Geisha.
4* Kanazawa Tokyu Hotel
Take the bullet train to Hiroshima, a place of great historical significance, and visit the park and Memorial Museum to learn more about the tragic history of this city. Catch a ferry over to the sacred island of Miyajima to visit the famous floating Torii Gate – a stunning and sacred shrine designed in a pier-like structure.
Grand Prince Hiroshima
This morning you’ll make your way to Himeji Castle, often considered the best preserved in Japan. Afterwards, you’ll be heading to Kyoto, where you’ll get the chance to wander the pretty Gion Geisha district. Kyoto is home to around 2,000 temples, shrines, palaces and museums, as well as multi-storied pagodas which you can explore. Perhaps the most significant of them is Fushimi Inari, an ancient shrine at the base of the mountain with the same name. Look out for the sweetly docile deer of Nara too, who also call this region home. Take the chance to learn about Zen meditation and calligraphy, as well as Kembu, the art of using a Japanese sword.
