Inching towards the Gulf of Thailand in the south, Bangkok is an assault on the senses. As soon as you step off the plane it’ll hit you full force, a hodgepodge of chaotic roads, gold-gilded temples and street food carts, ablaze with neon lights. Simply put, it’s not for the faint of heart, but you haven’t seen the Land of Smiles without experiencing Bangkok, which is why it’s one of our favourite places to start your holiday in Thailand.

Getting Around Bangkok
It’s easy to explore most of the districts on foot, but Bangkok is simply too big to explore entirely under your own steam. The elevated Skytrain (BTS) and the subway (MRT) will take you through the main business districts inexpensively, but for a more extensive exploration, opt for a taxi – don’t worry, fares are cheap. Riding a tuk-tuk is also an essential Bangkok experience, even just as a one-off. Make sure you negotiate a fair price before you climb aboard though, and be wary of scams.
When to Go to Bangkok
Bangkok’s weather is consistently hot year-around, so there’s never really a bad time to go. For less rain, Bangkok experiences its dry season from mid-November to April, while May to November is when the city experiences its monsoon season. Travelling in the rainy season shouldn’t put you off visiting Bangkok though, as warm, humid and rainy weather is often considered part of the fun when it comes to exploring this eclectic city. If you’re looking to visit Bangkok for a special event, we recommend timing your visit to mid-April for Songkran. Also known as the Thai New Year Festival, Songkran sees locals take to the streets to celebrate the beginning of the rainy season with a big water fight.
