Frequently asked questions

Ultimately, your packing list depends on the time of year you plan to visit Taupo. If you’re heading there in the warmer months, be sure to pack your swimsuit so you can make the most of Taupo’s incredible lakes and beaches. If you’re the kind of traveller who likes to explore on foot, some sturdy hiking boots, a backpack and a water bottle are year-round travel essentials.

Lake Taupo is the largest lake in New Zealand and a must-see for any visitor. Go for a swim, take a boat ride or just relax on the beach and soak up the stunning views. For the adventurous folk, Te Mata Peak offers panoramic views of the region and is a popular spot for hiking and mountain biking, and likewise, Huka Falls are pretty impressive. If you’re up for a challenge, Tongariro National Park is where you will find the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a world-renowned trek that takes you through volcanic landscapes and breathtaking vistas. Architecture lovers, be sure to check out Art Deco Napier and if you’re fond of wine, the Hawkes Bay wineries are guaranteed to deliver in the most delicious way possible.

If you're looking for warm weather and water-based activities, the summer months of December to February are ideal. Keep in mind that this is also peak tourist season, so if you prefer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, the autumn months of March to May can be a great time to get out and about enjoying wine tours. Winter (June to August) is great for skiing and snowboarding on Mount Ruapehu, and finally, spring (September to November), can be a great time to visit for those who want to avoid the peak summer crowds but still enjoy warmer temperatures and blooming wildflowers.

Sip wine, take a trip back in time and explore Napier, a city known for its beautifully preserved Art Deco architecture, soak in hot springs, skydive, take a hike, hit the mountain bike trails, go jet boating, chase waterfalls, learn about the customs and traditions of Maori culture, take a cooking class, learn to paddleboard, go for a dip in the ocean – no matter what your interests are, Taupo has something for everyone.
