Okinawa’s capital Naha is the ideal place to start. From there, you can venture out to Nago, which is on the northern part of the island and boasts one of the best beaches. Travellers with little ones or who prefer the ease of resorts will love Onna, while history buffs will be drawn to Nakijin like moths to a flame.

Can you ever really get bored of laying by the beach? As a general guide, aim for at least four nights to truly appreciate this magical place.

The best time to visit is in spring or autumn (roughly March to early May and late September to December). Okinawa’s rainy season generally kicks in from early May to early June, so you might want to skip it during those months or pack a raincoat.

Okinawan Japanese is the main language spoken in Okinawa, however, increasingly you will find people can speak English, too. Most of the large hotels and tourist facilities will also have English-speaking staff or can provide assistance in English.

It depends on what time of year you plan to travel but as a general guide, your swimsuit, sunscreen and a sense of adventure should serve you well in Okinawa.
