They’ve leveraged trusted data sources and government information to rank countries based on key factors for gay travellers, such as same-sex marriage, worker protections and criminalisation. 1. Toronto, Canada
According to Asher Fergusson’s LGBTQ+ Danger Index, Canada is the safest country for travellers, with Toronto being one of the most politically active cities in the world when it comes to gay rights. Canada also has strict laws in place to protect the LGBTQ+ community against violence and discrimination.
2. Stockholm, Sweden
LGBTQ+ rights in Sweden are viewed as some Europe’s most progressive. Indeed, all of Scandinavia’s nations made the top 20 in the index’s safe destinations.
3. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Unsurprisingly Amsterdam – one of Europe’s most liberal and open cities – is high on the list of safe countries. For many, The Netherlands is often regarded as the birthplace of gay rights.
4. Brussels, Belgium
Belgium is known for its relaxed attitude and acceptance of homosexuality. So whether you’re headed to Brussels on business, or Bruges for a city getaway, we highly recommend this wonderful country for same-sex travel.
6. Paris, France
Sitting 10th safest in the index, France has unveiled a national plan to combat the discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. And, with Paris being just a short jaunt across the Channel, it’s one of our favourites.
7. Sydney, Australia
LGBTQ+ laws in Australia differ depending on which state you’re in, but Sydney is well known (and beloved!) for its welcoming approach and gay-friendly scene.
Countries for LGBTQ+ Travellers to Avoid
It saddens us greatly that there are still a number of countries where being gay is illegal and, worst of all, homosexuality is criminalised with prison or corporal punishment. In particular, according to the index, these are the most dangerous destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers, and we recommend exercising caution when visiting:
- Nigeria
- Saudi Arabia
- Malaysia
- Malawi
- Oman
