Instatravellers: Phil the Travelling Pizza Eater
Meet Phil Duncan. He's from Liverpool, he loves travel and he, er, loves eating pizza. Need we say more? Well, we do actually, mainly the fact that his love of travel and pizza have managed to get him quite an Instagram following! 17,800 people in fact. A worthy addition to our Instatravellers series, we caught up with Phil to find out what it is that he finds so fascinating about cheese, tomato and dough.
So Phil, tell us how it all began.
Like most people, I enjoy going on holiday and seeing new places. During my time at university I took full advantage of having time off over the summer and got to travel for a few months at a time. I would just post pictures of my travels and, as I was eating pizza along the way, those photos would make my Instagram. It wasn’t long before I noticed that those photos would get more attention, so decided to continue posting pizza pics from all the countries I visited.
Have you always been passionate about travelling? And pizza?!
I have always loved pizza and back when I was a fussy eater as a kid, I would only eat that when I was on holiday as I could trust it. Now I like to mix it up and eat the local food, but also try the local variations of what they do for pizza.
The more countries I visit and get to spend time in, the more places I want to see. Travelling has taught me so much about myself and my passions.
How many countries have you visited?
I have visited over 30 now, in five different continents.
What’s been your favourite place?
I have been to Thailand three times now and they have been some of the most fun times I have had with my friends. I recently visited Rio De Janeiro in Brazil and that is easily my favourite city now. Absolutely beautiful.
Which country had the best pizza?
New York City, USA, has the best pizza of all the place I’ve been – and a lot of it. I recently managed to get to 10 different pizza places within in one 36-hour Big Apple trip and it was amazing.
What is your favourite pizza? And do you ever get tired of eating it?!
There’s so much variety with pizza toppings that I never get bored of eating it. I love most pizzas, but I will always try a margherita or a pepperoni to test how good a place is.
What’s the response been like from your followers?
The majority of what I have seen is pretty positive. At the end of the day it’s just a bit of fun, so nothing to get too angry about. It’s great because I now get really good tips from people on Instagram on where to go and what to eat.
What’s the long-term plan?
I want to keep developing and building my pizza inspired travel blog: www.travel-slice.com. I also hope to keep visiting new places and eventually open my own pizzeria once I settle somewhere.
