Carving pumpkins, stocking up on sweet treats and watching a horror movie is all part and parcel of All Hallows Eve. Halloween is the perfect time to settle in and watch your favourite scary films, but why not go one better this year and visit frightening film locations for yourself? Whether you visit one or embark on a Halloween themed road trip, here’s a run down of the scariest Halloween film locations to visit this month.

West Hollywood – A Nightmare on Elm Street

Hard-core Freddy Krueger fans should head to West Hollywood where you can find the protagonist Nancy’s house where she is taunted by the iconic serial killer. Directly opposite, you can also see the house where the character played by Johnny Depp meets his gory demise. Nancy’s home is instantly recognizable from its white columns and it is nestled in a suburban area located on 1428 N. Genesee Avenue.

New York City – Rosemary’s Baby

This horror classic has many suspenseful apartment scenes not forgetting the iconic final scene all of which were filmed in New York City. In the movie, the apartments are referred to as The Bramford but the scenes were shot at the Dakota Hotel that is still standing today. It can be found at the northwest corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West.

New Jersey – Friday the 13th

Hidden in the depths of Blairstown New Jersey is where you will find the Friday the 13th film locations. You can visit the location of the opening scenes which take place in a Movie Theatre on Main Street. Blairstown is also home to the fictional Camp Crystal Lake where Jason Voorhees commits his crimes but if you want to visit the camp itself (named Camp No Be Bo Sco) you will have to book in advance as this camp is only open to the public for VIP tours that can be entered only via a lottery.

Oregon - The Shining

The ultimate film location for Stephen King fans is undoubtedly Oregon’s Timberline Lodge otherwise known as the fictional Overlook hotel. Located near the Hood River, this is where the exterior shots were filmed for the Shining. Avid fans of this horror flick will know that the interior shots were filmed in England but this eerie building is part of a luxury ski resort.

Long Island – Amityville Horror

Who can forget the haunting sillhuette of the Amityville Horror House? Based on real life events that occurred in 1974, the house where the murders took place is located at 112 Ocean Avenue in Long Island but only some of the movie was filmed here. Most of the scenes were filmed in a house in New Jersey that had been renovated to look like it.

Washington DC – The Exorcist

One of the greatest horror films of all time, The Exorcist was filmed in Washington DC and the Georgetown neighborhood is the place to visit this Halloween. It’s here you’ll see the infamous staircase featured in the film where Father Karras falls to his death.

Bastrop Texas – Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Cult horror buffs will be delighted to know that you can visit the macabre gas station featured in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. Today it’s been transformed into a BBQ restaurant. You can also find the Sawyer House on Highway 1431 in Kingsland, this has been converted into a Hotel. What better place to stay on Halloween night?

London – Hellraiser

London residents don’t have to travel far to visit an iconic horror movie location as the Hellraiser house is located in Cricklewood. Today the building has been turned into flats but the exterior is still reminiscent of the legendary Cotton House where Frank opens the doors to hell.

Seneca Creek State Park – The Blair Witch Project

Brimming with eerie vibes is the fictional Black Hills Forest also known as the Seneca Creek State Park in Maryland. The woodland scenes were all filmed here and let’s not forget the creepy house in the woods where the final scenes were shot. Griggs House is a historical building located in Granite that is over 200 years old. A must-see for any Blair Witch fan.
