Lisbon Airport (LIS) Guide

About Lisbon Airport (LIS)

Lisbon Airport (LIS), officially Humberto Delgado Airport, is Portugal’s biggest and busiest international hub, welcoming over 35 million passengers every year. Lisbon Airport is the main base for the country’s flag carrier, TAP Air Portugal, and is consistently ranked as one of the busiest single-runway airports in Europe, acting as a major hub for both connecting and direct flights across Europe, Africa and South America. Conveniently located less than 10km from Lisbon’s city centre, travellers can find themselves exploring the Baixa district, sampling authentic pastel de nata in Belém or visiting the famous Castelo de São Jorge (St. George’s Castle) in no time!

Make sure you confirm check-in times and terminals with your airline before you travel, as each may have different requirements, and allow for plenty of time at the airport before your flight. Keep in mind, it may be possible to check in for your flights online via your airline’s website or app, which can be an easy way to save time at the airport on the day of travel.

Baggage

Baggage allowances for flights departing Lisbon Airport vary by airline and ticket class, so it’s important to confirm what’s included with your flight booking to avoid any surprises at bag drop. For more specific information on baggage limits, such as the size, weight and number of bags included in your airfare, check with your airline or ask your Travel Expert for assistance.

Looking for the best ways to travel from Lisbon Airport to the city centre? There are plenty of ground transportation options available.

ANA Parking is the official parking provider for Lisbon Airport and offers a variety of convenient parking spots within easy access of the terminals, including covered and open-air options. We’d recommend booking online in advance to secure your parking spot and access discounted rates.

Keen to explore Portugal at your own pace? A number of car rental companies, including AVIS, Europcar and Sixt, are available at Lisbon Airport. Talk to your Travel Expert about organising car hire for your trip or book it yourself online before you leave.

Lisbon Airport is an easy 20-minute drive from the city centre (depending on traffic), making taxi services a comfortable and efficient mode of transport. Look for taxi ranks outside the arrivals and departures terminals at Lisbon Airport. Rideshare options like Uber and Bolt are also available from the dedicated pick-up area on Level 2 (Arrivals level).

Airport shuttles and hotel transfers provide a good balance of convenience and affordability when travelling to or from Lisbon Airport. It’s worth organising this in advance, so ask your Travel Expert to help you book airport or hotel transfers today!

The Lisbon Metro network is one of the easiest ways to get from the airport to the city centre by public transport, and the Red Line (Linha Vermelha) will see you exploring downtown Lisbon in roughly 20 minutes. Bus and train options are also available but may require more connections and longer wait times, so in most cases the Metro will be more convenient unless you’re travelling outside of Lisbon to another area of Portugal. See the Lisbon Metro website for up-to-date information on timetables and fares.

A free shuttle service connects Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, running approximately every 12 minutes between 3:30am and 12:30am (the next day). The journey takes less than five minutes, picking up and dropping off from the Departures areas of both terminals.
