Exploring Cape Town with Urban Adventures

Cape Town

When you travel, are you somebody who seeks to uncover the authentic side of your destination? To discover the local customs, traditions, people and cuisine and really immerse yourself in the local culture? Or perhaps you’d like to explore the best bits of your holiday destination with a tour company that really has the insider knowledge…that’s where Urban Adventures comes in.

Urban Adventures is a unique group tour company that aims to support responsible tourism through tours that are designed, built and run by local experts. On every tour (which operate in over 150 cities worldwide), expect a fun, unique and local perspective of the city you’re in – covering everything from local food tastings, to street art, hidden gems and cultural hotspots.

Working together, Flight Centre and Urban Adventures have joined forces to create Flight Centre Local, bringing you specially curated tours and even private ‘Create Your Own’ experience tours which you wouldn’t necessarily be able to do otherwise. These exclusive tours include a History & Culture of Cape Town tour, and a Salt River Street Art Experience tour.

During my South Africa trip with colleagues, Urban Adventures organised for us to hike up Table Mountain at dawn, followed by a cable car ride back down and a tour of Woodstock and Salt River. Everything was excellently organised, and it was clear through the unique stories and city history we learnt about, that without a local guide, we would not have had this level of insight.

I sat down with Preston Fortuin, Cape Town Urban Adventures Manager, to talk all things Urban Adventures and why the tours they offer are a fantastic addition to your holiday.

Tell us about Urban Adventures, what’s the idea behind it?

Essentially, we put our focus on the local experience, with true local experts and local spots that immerse our clients in the city’s culture. At Urban Adventures, our tours are created and run by the people that call these urban places their home. Urban Adventures aims to support responsible tourism. We believe that our tours offer a great way to introduce people to the local culture and learn from the knowledge of people from the community. The people joining us on tour can be a part of the action, instead of looking from the outside in.

What makes you different to other tour operators?

Urban adventures operate in a franchise network model, in which each destination is 100% locally owned and operated.

What are some of the best experiences you offer in Cape Town, or South Africa in general?

We offer our guests a unique walking experience through the hip and funky Woodstock area, where they can immerse in local craft shops, food and drink as well as the amazing public art murals. We also offer an experience where we make use of local transport to Muizenberg and then walk along the beach to Kalk bay, along the way visiting some of the oldest shops and places in the area and finishing off at one of the best local restaurants there.

Are there any limits to group size? Ie from private (two) to 20 people?

We focus on giving a more personalised experience, where people have the opportunity to connect, share and learn from each other. For that reason, we keep our groups to a maximum of 12 people, as it is difficult to make such a connection with bigger groups.

How important is it for Urban Adventures to utilise the knowledge of local people for local tours?

It is essential. Our local guides are the heart of our tours. In addition to the knowledge they are sharing on the tour itself, they can give you first-hand information on what it is like to be a part of the community and make you feel like you are learning to become a part of community yourself.

What are some of the best customer experiences/tours you’ve done?

We aim for every tour we do to be the best day ever for our guests, as we give our all to every experience we do.

Can you cater to specific group types and bespoke tour requirements?

Yes, we currently have five tours/experiences exclusive for Flight Centre guests as part of a brand partnership, called Flight Centre Locals. These tours are generally approx. 2h30 in duration and are all walking experiences. Where there is a need, we make use of local transport.
