An Expert’s Guide to Victoria and New South Wales

25 Jan 2018

“From the buzz of city life to the serenity of nature-packed national parks, via some of the most pristine beaches on Earth, it’s endlessly inspirational here.” Leanne Broutta first visited New South Wales as a backpacker before returning to live in Sydney for seven months. She is now a Flight Centre Australasia Expert. Here she shares some of her top tips for travelling to Victoria and New South Wales:

Make the most of your journey

Our Australia trips are tailor made, so your holiday can be mapped out before you travel. And flying to Victoria or New South Wales is easy, with Etihad Airways offering every comfort for the 24-hour flight via Abu Dhabi. Its touch-screen TVs have more on-demand entertainment than you will ever need, and the seats are adjustable.

Time your visit properly

There’s never a bad time to visit, with the seasons changing from mild winters to hot summers – but it can be very busy in January, at the height of summer.

Get immersed in indigenous culture

A visit to Melbourne Museum’s immersive Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre is a powerful and poignant way to learn about the fascinating history of Aboriginal Victoria, right up to the present day.

Explore The Rocks

In Sydney, The Rocks area is quite an old neighbourhood, with an unusual, nostalgic feel. There are lots of old pubs here, and many of the restaurants have harbour views.

Spend wisely

Waiters and bar staff don’t expect tips, so you can save your Australian dollars for boat tours and surf lessons.

Stay with the animals

For an unusual stay, check in to Taronga Zoo as part of its Roar & Snore offering, sleeping in safari-style tents. Some 4,000 animals are cared for here, and you can count yourself among them for the night!

Discover all the different landscapes

The landscapes are amazing and there’s such variety. Coastal routes reveal stunning coves and beaches, or you can head inland for lush river valleys, gum tree forests and old gold-mining towns.
