Best city break destinations

The city break: an exciting getaway that doesn’t demand a chunk of your precious holiday time, and that allows you to explore somewhere new in just a few days. City breaks might not involve much relaxing around the pool or sipping from a coconut on the beach, but you’ll find shopping, culture, architecture, food and cocktails in some of the world’s best bars. If you’re craving a getaway to satisfy your wanderlust until summer, here are a few of the best city break destinations around the world.

New York

The crème de la crème of cities, New York has got the lot. A long weekend to this non-stop American city can include anything from art to nature. We love visiting world-renowned galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art and then strolling through Central Park before getting a dose of Sex and the City style retail therapy on 5th Avenue. Tower over the city's skyline from the top of the Empire State Building and then, as the sun dips behind the tightly-clustered skyscrapers, enjoy a cocktail on a rooftop bar or be entertained on Broadway amidst the bright city lights.

Hong Kong

If it’s culture you’re hoping to experience then Asia's World City, Hong Kong, should appear on your city break bucket list. Make sure the Temple Street Night Market is firmly on your itinerary; this vast bazaar sells anything and everything you could imagine (and more) and is a great place to grab a bite to eat. Once you've sampled the local food and purchased souvenir trinkets to take home, escape the hustle and bustle by riding the historic railway up to the top of Victoria Peak to marvel at the city panorama unfolding before you.

Dubai evokes fascination in the minds of many, with its clash of modern, high-rise buildings and surrounding desertscapes. A city break to Dubai can be as bustling and full of culture as a visit to New York, or as relaxing and sun-soaked as a summer holiday. The choice is yours. Enjoy almost guaranteed warm weather and take your pick between modern luxuries and traditional experiences (although we recommend making time for both).

For a European city break that feels a lot further from home, take a trip to the Hungarian capital, Budapest. In summer its outdoor bars and restaurants are buzzing with locals and tourists alike, the parks are green and begging to be strolled through and the outdoor pools are ideal for a refreshing dip. There is culture and history to delve into, architecture to marvel at and traditional food to savour. The flight is just a little over two hours which means you have more time to explore when you arrive. While you're there, don’t miss the stunning views over the Danube from Fisherman’s Bastion on the Buda side of the city.
