Arles

Embark on an exploration of a sun-drenched Provençal town with a unique allure of its own. Renowned for its remarkable Roman ruins, Arles served as a profound inspiration for Van Gogh, who created around 200 paintings while residing there. With a history dating back to the sixth century BC, Arles was originally founded by the ancient Greeks and named Theline. Notably, it was here that the Romans constructed their inaugural bridge over the Rhône River, establishing a crucial overland route connecting Italy and Spain.

Today's exploration will encompass a visit to the majestic Palace of the Popes and other fascinating sights, along with an exciting opportunity to kayak beneath a 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct.

Over the centuries, additional fortifications, including two "new" towers built to defend against Protestant attacks in the 16th century, were added to the town's landscape. As you stroll through the Rue de Doux area, you'll encounter elegant houses built by affluent merchants and garrison officers, each one narrating a tale of its own.
