Welcome to the sun-kissed state of California

More than just a state, California has become synonymous with a sound, style and lifestyle all of its own. Its unique attributes make it the most visited state in the USA. And while the California clichés of sunny weather, golden beaches, palm trees and friendly locals ring true, there's so much more to the state than its Hollywood depictions (Hollywood being one of them).

Yes, there are the beaches – Santa Monica, Newport and Malibu to name a few – but there are also deserts, notably Death Valley – the lowest, driest and hottest area in North America. You’ll also find snow-capped mountains in the Sierra Nevada, rolling wine regions in the north and giant sequoia trees in Yosemite National Park. And then there are the cities – the glamorous home of Hollywood in Los Angeles and the Bohemian home of innovation in San Francisco. To experience it all, hire a car and hit the road; the Golden State is also the perfect place to begin that all-American road trip. California, here we come!

California is a big place. Let us help you tackle it.

California is big. The third biggest USA state in fact. Bordering Oregon in the north and Mexico in the south, it stretches nearly 900 miles down the west coast. Needless to say, there's plenty to see, and plenty of roads to see it by. While you can fly between the state's main cities – Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose – driving between them provides a much more scenic route. In fact, California is said to have some of the most picturesque stretches of tarmac in the States, most notably the Big Sur coastline with its breathtaking Bixby Creek Bridge.

California driving holidays can take on any number of forms – which is why all of our California holiday itineraries can be tailor made. If we had to recommend just one way to see California though, it would be on our California and Canyons holiday. Taking place across 12 days, you'll fly into San Francisco for two nights before enjoying the scenic drive to Yosemite National Park and then onto Death Valley. You'll then cross the border into the state of Nevada for a few nights in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon before heading back to Cali for a few nights in Los Angeles.
