Welcome to Miami
Whether you prefer the beach, the city or a bit of adventure guest blogger Tom Jacobs explains how Miami has something for everyone.
Miami is exactly like the fantastic fondue restaurant on Sunset Drive, The Melting Pot. The city is certainly a fusion of things that shouldn’t work together but somehow do and in a spectacular fashion to boot! From the many different cultures to the art deco scene around South Beach there is something for every personality down in Southern Florida.
One of the best thing's about Miami is the ability to experience every type of holiday in one destination.
Beach fan? No problem Miami has huge wide open beaches. They are clean, vast, vibrant and pretty much get the sun all year round.
Shopping addict? Less than an hour outside of Miami is Sawgrass Mills. It’s one of the largest Mall’s in the whole of the USA and boasts over 350 shops. Even if you don’t like shopping you can’t fail to find something to buy here!
City slicker? Whilst it’s situated on the beach Miami is still a cosmopolitan city. Spend a day away from the beach and head to the high rise financial district or enjoy some time in the Little Havana neighbourhood, the heart of the Cuban exile community where the streets are alive with welcoming people, excellent restaurants and cultural festivities. Alternatively experience the historical city of Coral Cables, the home of the University of Miami.
Party animal? Then Miami is ideal for you. The city hosts some of the best events and festivals all year round from the Ultra Music Festival or White Party to the Art Deco Weekend and South Beach Comedy Festival. It doesn’t matter what type of party you enjoy Miami offers it! If you’re not in the city during a festival or event then you can hit South Beach and party alongside celebs at famous clubs such as B.E.D. and Mansion.
Foodie? No worries here. Get a pizza slice from a shop window, eat some incredible Cuban food at Versailles in Little Havana, grab a premium steak at Prime 112 or go to the traditional American 11th St Diner from where they serve breakfast 24 hours a day!
Intrepid adventurer? How does riding an airboat and hunting for alligators sound? The Everglades are a unique ecosystem and are within easy reach of Miami. There is also a huge range of options for tours to the area from a half day visit up to 7 nights spent camping and staying in lodges.
Spectator sport? If you still have time and want to experience some American sports then Miami has an excellent NBA team the Miami Heat, an NFL team the Miami Dolphins and a MLB team the Florida Marlins.
Restless? Miami is a great place to base yourself for a varied and exciting holiday. You can enjoy a day trip to either Key Largo or Key West, spend time in the Everglades, head up the coast to Fort Lauderdale or even take a short cruise to the Bahamas.
That is quite a few reasons to head to Miami, no matter what you are looking for! Flights from London take just over 9 hours direct and you will find current prices here. Tom chronicles more of his travels on his twitter account @journeytom.
