Instatraveller: Globetrotting Dogs Django and Chloe

25 Aug 2017

Seven countries and counting – lovable pooches Django and Chloe have been busy exploring the world and sharing it all on Instagram. With over 16,000 people following their story, we caught up with their owners Bruna and Luiz to find out more about their adventures...

How did it all begin?

Luiz and I have always been dog lovers. And after living for four years abroad (in Portugal) and coming back to Brazil in 2013 we decided it was time for us to finally have our own dogs. We wanted to have two dogs so they would never be alone and they would always have a friend to give each other company.  Luiz chose Django and I chose Chloe. They are the same age, just a month and a half apart. We got Chloe first, she is actually from Portugal, and 20 days later we got Django, he came from São Paulo.

The Instagram account started like many dog accounts start, our own personal accounts were becoming all about them, so we decided they should have their own. Needless to say, their account is much more active than ours since then.

The funny thing is that we decided we wouldn't have a dog while living in Europe because we were travelling a lot during that time and we thought we didn't have a lifestyle that would fit a dog, but after having Django and Chloe we started doing some research and we saw that it was totally possible to travel with them.

What's the reaction been like on Instagram?

It's been pretty amazing, we made so many friends online. And we also got the opportunity to meet some of these people in person and become good friends. It's a great way to connect with dog lovers, people that have the same passion as you. We can also share so many information about all kinds of dog-related subjects, from health to pet friendly places and canine travel tips. We actually get a lot of questions related to travelling: how they go – in cabin or cargo – about the bag carrier, the airline pet policies, the documents required to travel etc. And we have also consulted some Instagram friends to help us out when we have any doubt.

Where did the names Django and Chloe come from?

Everyone thinks Django is because of Tarantino's movie – Django Unchained – and even though we love the movie, his name was actually chosen after the jazz musician, Django Reinhardt. And Chloe, there is no special story behind it, sorry! We just really like the name. Django’s full name is De Vita Django Latini Bustamante (De Vita is the breeder’s last name and Latini and Bustamante are ours). And Chloe is just Chloe (no last name), like a diva – just as Cher or Madonna.

What’s your favourite image of the two of them and why?

It’s hard to elect just one, but we guess this photo (see above) shows them at their happiest, doing the thing they love the most, running free and playing at the beach. It also brings good memories from this amazing trip, one week of paradise beaches in Alagoas, in northeastern Brazil.

How many countries have they travelled to, and do you have a favourite place you have visited?

They have been to seven countries so far (Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden and USA). Munich was an amazing travel because they were allowed almost everywhere, it was the most pet-friendly city we’ve been to. And Los Angeles was pretty special, we met so many dog lovers, people would stop us and start a conversation because of the dogs. We also met some long-time Instagram friends from there.

Do they have a favourite activity or place?

Their favourite thing in the world is to play fetch at the beach. Django is totally obsessed with balls (tennis balls are his favourites), Chloe was not that into them as a puppy but she started playing just to annoy Django – now she loves it too.

Where’s the next adventure?

We have nothing planned for now, but probably New York, it’s a city we love and we are dying to take the dogs there.

Where is home?

“Home is wherever I’m with you." We really believe Django and Chloe think so, they are very much adaptable and this is what makes it so easy to travel with them. They are always so excited and curious when they go to new places. And they also love their carrier bags, whenever we take them out of the closet they go straight inside, guess they know we are about to have a new adventure. One of our worries before we started to travel with them was how they would react to the long flights, but they have been perfect since the first time; they actually sleep almost all of the flight (without any medication)!
