5 Things You Have to Experience in Oman
Often overshadowed by its glitzy and glamorous neighbour, Dubai, Oman is bursting with lesser-known delights that make it the perfect year-round holiday destination. If you are planning on adding it to your travel bucket list, here are five things to add to your Oman itinerary:
One thing you absolutely must do during your trip to Oman is experience the magic of the desert. The Wahiba Sands desert is made up of 4,000 square miles of golden sands and you can enjoy exhilarating activities by day and practise stargazing at night. With ridges of sand that tower taller than Big Ben, it’s no surprise the Empty Quarter area is a hotspot for thrillseekers, deseperate to spend the day sandboarding, dune buggying and quad biking. Be sure to always do these experiences with a qualified guide. For something a little more low key, you can take in the golden dunes in all their glory while riding a camel.
Traditional Omani Dishes
If you really want to immerse yourself in Omani culture, there is no better way to do this than to sample some of their traditional cuisine. Meat and rice dishes are common here and you will find chicken majboos on most menus throughout your stay. Delicious dates are featured heavily in a range of sweet and savoury dishes also, as they can be readily found on palm trees. Meshkak is another popular dish that offers a real treat for the taste buds. Essentially a kebab, beef, chicken or mutton is marinated with a range of high-quality spices and grilled on sticks. If you have a sweet tooth, look out for halwa which boasts a custard-like consistency and it is one of the most sought-after sharing desserts in Oman.
The Frankincense Trail
This World Heritage site is home to no less than 5,000 frankincense trees and makes up a stunning forest trail that is 2,000 miles long. Here, you can explore the ancient history of the Omani trade industry. Located in the Dhofar region, this trail was once used to transport frankincense, which was once more valuable than gold. Today you can walk the trail and marvel at the ancient ruins, as well as soaking up the beauty of the temples, wells and ancient monuments.
Sightseeing at the Highest Peak in the Region
The Musandam Peninsula is one of the most Instagrammable spots in Oman; it's easy to while away the hours here watching dolphins as they frolic in the fjords. This area is often referred to as the Norway of the Middle East thanks to its natural beauty and dramatic scenery. Jebel Al Harim is the ultimate place to stop for a bite. Standing 2,087 metres above sea level, the epic mountain scenery is reason alone to visit, not to mention the rocks are studded with marine fossils which are a sight to behold.
The Veuve Clicquot Brunch at Al Bustan Palace
Known as one of the most spectacular five-star hotels in the world, get a day pass and spend a few hours in complete luxury at the Al Bustan Palace. Enjoy a leisurely beachfront Veuve Clicquot brunch (which takes place every Friday) and take a stroll on the private beach that spans 0.6 miles in length. While you are here, take a moment to marvel at the 60ft chandelier in the atrium and book a treatment at the Six Senses Spa.
