First of all, tell us about X2 Bali Breakers. What makes it special?

X2 Bali Breakers Resort is luxurious and vibrant! It’s nestled in the southern peninsula of Bali and just 5 minutes away from the legendary Balangan Beach, famous for surfing. We are one of the newest hotels in the area with 57 finely decorated villas, each with its own tropical garden and private plunge pool. There’s also generous public spaces, including two pools, and the Point Break restaurant, all with surf inspired design and modern simplicity.

So every villa comes with a plunge pool, they just have a different number of bedrooms?

Yes, there are one, two and three-bedroom pool villas. The one bedroom villa has a private outdoor living space, pool and sundeck, with direct access from the bedroom and a palatial bathroom. Our “Dwitaya” two-bedroom deluxe pool villas are beautifully arranged for families, friends, and small groups, and feature a King-size bed for the master bedroom, and twin beds for the second bedroom. There’s a larger private outdoor dining and lounge area, including a widescreen TV. The three bedroom pool villas are even more spacious and luxurious and offer an additional bedroom with King-size bed.

What can people expect from a holiday here?

I think it’s ideal for those seeking to enjoy the active lifestyle at its best. We offer privacy without isolation and excellent service. The resort is surrounded by green spaces, so it’s ideal for joggers and cyclists to explore – we have bikes available for guest use.

Or it can be a place to chill. X2 is a splendid setting for romance, for couples looking to share their most magical moments in their private pool villa – including our special floating breakfast!

They can also enjoy the lively atmosphere of our very own Point Break Restaurant with indoor and outdoor Balinese-inspired seating and a menu influenced by the international experience of our Balinese Chef. So you get the best of both worlds, like our Benedict Betutu breakfast dish, for example.  There’s also the Sunken Pool Bar in our main swimming pool, and the scenic Hang Loose Bar offering great views, so there’s a few options for guests to relax.

I had the Benedict Betutu for breakfast the other day. It was delicious. Tell us a little more about it - it’s a Balinese twist on a classic dish.

Benedict Betutu is a combination of eggs benedict and chicken betutu. Betutu is a spicy sauce mostly used for chicken, it’s a classic Balinese recipe and very famous in Bali. It can be spicy and not so spicy, but the taste is very special and the Benedict is a favourite amongst guests and often order another portion!

What other facilities does the resort offer?

They also can pamper from head to toe in our X2 Spa with dedicated and experienced therapists and with signature ingredients of Aloe Vera. And they can stay fit during their holiday with X2 Fit, our outdoor gym.

If they are going to nearby Balangan Beach for a surf lesson or to see the sunset, they can get there by bike or take our beach shuttle, which we’ve nicknamed ‘Wave Raider’!

Wave Raider? Oh, yes it looks like a surfer’s campervan!

That’s right, it’s our free shuttle to the beach.

How is this different to other hotels in the region?

Our location first of all. It’s in a secluded location but with luxury design and the best facilities for the guests – the generous public spaces, which never feel busy or crowded. So it’s secluded but guests don’t feel isolated when they stay with us. I did ask the designer about the location, why it wasn’t built on the beach or on a cliff overlooking the water and the idea was to make this a haven of greenery and water off the beaten track. And when guests enter the lobby they are generally very impressed with the view across the property.

It is a bit of a lush oasis! How would you describe the style of hospitality here? Is it very formal? Or more relaxed luxury? Are employees always on first name terms with guests? People keep calling me Mr. Phil, for example!

[Laughter] Well, yes, it’s definitely more relaxed luxury. It’s less formal but guests can still enjoy luxury, still enjoy privacy and expect a high level of service. Our staff are young and dynamic and they can understand multiple languages. They are encouraged to be natural, to be themselves, and to call guests by name. That’s the most important interaction and they try to be helpful in every situation. They are experienced and have all been trained in hospitality, so they love to do their job and embrace all guests’ happiness!

What’s great as well is, the resort is almost full at the moment and it doesn’t feel very busy at all, I guess because people have their plunge pool and they use the main pools at different times. We’ve been the only people in the lower pool every time we’ve used it. So it does feel very private, not too crowded and not too noisy.

Yes, the plunge pools and the private outdoor areas with the villa make them very appealing. And guests are also heading to the beach or exploring the island of Bali on the tours we offer. We have day tours to Ubud, evening tours to watch the sunset at Uluwatu temple‎ and the traditional Kecak dance, rafting tours. The Garuda Winsu Kencana culture park is nearby.  There’s a lot to do!

With parents in the travel industry, I was pretty much born with one of those take-off sweets in my mouth. I’m very fortunate to be close to clocking up my 50th country - not that I’ll slow down after that. No matter how many places I visit, I don’t think the excitement that comes with boarding a plane will ever wear off. Flying, for me, is one of the most extraordinary things we get to do as human beings and I’ll always be first in line for that window seat!
