Shopping Secrets From Around the World

Former fashion stylist and style writer Isabel Dexter shares her shopping secrets from around the globe...

Bags of style in Mexico

Last year, I went to Tulum in Mexico for a chilled-out beach holiday and stumbled across a gem of a shop called Artesania on Calle Porfirio Diaz. Cue rainbow-bright jewellery and the most beautiful, boho leather bags I’d ever seen, all made using authentic age-old local stitching techniques. Needless to say, I seriously stocked up! If you’re in Tulum, also head to Hoki Poki Kana. Designer Cécile Herrero-Sanchez’s boutique sells lust-worthy fashion and jewellery.

Tasmania – devilishly good shopping

Tasmania is a beautiful, unspoilt wilderness with excellent restaurants and fantastic local artisan communities. Kate and Bradley Von Rock run Haus Creative, in Devonport, which hosts artist markets and events that span the visual, performing and literary arts. Last time I was there I picked up a beautiful pendant by Tasmanian artist Nilissa Wood, who works as a printmaker, photographer and painter. www.instagram.com/hauscreative

Brazil bottled

In Rio my Brazilian-born friend Leticia took me to Farm Rio, telling me its clothes are ‘Brazil bottled’. There are bright print dresses for beach-to-bar days, and enough styles and sizes of bikini for you to spend your whole life pretending to be Brazilian beauty Gisele Bündchen. I’ve had the three bikinis I bought there for four years and they’re still going strong. I now have my eye on a denim jacket with a parrot embroidered on the back… www.farmrio.com.br

Handmade in Morocco’s souks

Since I first visited Marrakech in 2014, this heady, dusty-pink city has cast its alluring spell wide – thanks in no small part to British-born Alan Crump and his French wife, who run the beautiful, traditional Riad el Zohar in the heart of the Medina. With its vermillion-red furnishings, a central courtyard and tiled plunge pool, staying there is like finding yourself inside One Thousand and One Arabian Nights. Alan is also your ticket to negotiating the souks, filled with authentic Kilim rugs and precious oils and spices. He introduced me to Karim, who weaves raffia shoes by hand and has an incredible array of designs – brogues in pastel pink leather, lace-ups with tan and black motifs, and beautiful Roman leather sandals. www.riadelzohar.co.uk

New York, I love you

I love the eclectic buzz of Brooklyn and, as well as vintage finds, I always end up buying something in the Luxury By Nature line from M. Boutique in Franklin Street. Alongside all the super-luxe dog-grooming products your pooch could dream of, its (human-grooming) Foster My Body products are made entirely of natural ingredients. I’m currently obsessed with Smoke, a spicy, intoxicating scent made with green tea and rosemary. www.mboutiqueintl.com
