We look beyond the souvenir shops and root out the boutiques and bazaars in destinations that those in the know are flocking to. Credit card? Check. Comfy shoes? Check. It's time to shop like a pro.

After you’ve shopped the colossal Mall of the Emirates, head to the ancient souks on either side of the Dubai Creek. Seek out slippers and silks at the Textile Souk, oud at the Perfume Souk and cardamom at the Spice Souk. Take a boat from one side to the other.

Get your best bargaining head on and visit Craft Link in Van Mieu. This not-for-profit organisation helps poor hillside tribes and craft producers get a fair wage. You’ll find silk lanterns, lacquer vases, hemp and silk cushions, bamboo cookware, local pottery and more.

Simon Johnson in Pyrmont has been selling to the world’s best chefs and foodies for around 20 years. This ‘posh grocer’ has everything from white truffle oil to lemon salt flakes, and also stocks kitchen equipment.

3 of the best

The USA reigns supreme when it comes to building super-sized shopping plazas. Make sure your phone’s charged as you may get lost in these mega malls…

  • Chicago. Water Tower Place: This eight-level shopping centre at the northern tip of the Magnificent Mile district on Michigan Avenue is where you’ll find the best of Chicago’s shops – it houses more than 100 stores, including Macy’s, a Lego store and Eileen Fisher.
  • New York. Time Warner Centre: This Manhattan beauty is home to the Mandarin Oriental New York and has an awesome view of Central Park. Inside you’ll also find The Shops at Columbus Circle – an upscale mall with Tumi luggage, Thomas Pink, Bose and Armani Exchange.
  • San Francisco. Westfield SF Centre: These five levels of shopping nirvana are host to high-street stalwarts J. Crew and Abercrombie & Fitch. There’s also a Bloomingdale’s, a Nordstrom department store, and movies at Century Theatres.
