Ladies Night: Review of the Portal Hotel, Brisbane

During a recent stay at the Portal Hotel in Brisbane I was impressed by their novel idea of a ladies only floor and fell in love with their breakfast. In addition to this the Portal Hotel has a great central location, modern decor and personal service. Situated in the city centre, the Queen Street Mall and Riverside Central Train station are only a short walk away. Whether visiting Brisbane on business or pleasure you could not be better located.

The hotel is stylishly designed with dark wallpaper and soft lighting from chandeliers and decorative lamps in the hallways. The rooms are compact but more than fit for purpose; plug sockets near the bed (so you can charge your phone overnight but it still be within arms reach when the alarm goes off in the morning!) as well as an iPod docking station. These are the kind of small touches which are often overlooked by a hotel but make your stay so much more comfortable when included. Wifi is unfortunately not included for free (a bug bear of mine which is far too commonplace in city hotels as far as I am concerned!) but you are able to purchase internet access via the reasonably priced Global Gossip network cards which can be found at reception.

For the ladies

The Portal Hotel is the first hotel in Australia to introduce a ladies only floor. Popular with business travellers and hen parties, not even the male hotel staff are allowed on this level. The rooms include glossy mags, GHD hair straighteners and even a yoga mat so the ladies can feel truly pampered. This novel idea made it onto a local news programme.

The Best Bit

For me the best thing about the Portal Hotel is the breakfast. No soggy sausages on a buffet at this establishment. Rather you can choose your own dish and have it served along with frothy coffee and fresh smoothies to your very own perch on a bar stool in the trendy O-Bar. The menu options include avocado and tomato on toast as well as this pancake, berry and ice cream concoction which I devoured every morning! A dish, hot drink and fresh juice are all included in the price of your room and if you are short of time can be wrapped up to take away so you don't miss out.

Whether visiting Brisbane on business or pleasure, for ladies and foodies, the Portal Hotel combines style with personal touches that make it a place you should definitely consider checking into.
