Instatraveller: the Llama With No Drama (But Lots of Travel!)

We’ve been working on the Instatraveller series for a little while now, but this might just be our favourite so far. A toy llama travels the globe, bringing us happy travel stories – what more could you want from an Instagram account?! Here we caught up with llama owner Eylul Savas about how @llamawithnodrama has become such a success over the last few months:

So how did @llamawithnodrama begin?

Overall, the world's drama was the trigger for me. Everyday, as if trying to deal with our own daily struggles is not enough, we're also being exposed to so many sad stories in the media. Filtering positive and negative messages is almost impossible these days and unfortunately it's the negative ones that make the news. Like many people I'm sure, I'm the kind of person who can easily be brought down by this kind of news. So I wanted to start something that would put a smile on people's faces. It's that simple. It gives them a reason to be distracted from their (and the world's) problems, even if it's just for a moment. That's how everything started.

But why a llama?

I chose a llama because people don't know much about them; they are funny looking and, despite the rhyme 'drama llama', they're actually pretty drama-free. They're free spirits and can spit on your face for no reason, so why not a llama?!

When did he start accompanying you on adventures?

At the beginning of April 2016.

But why photos of the llama, and not you?

Because I’m not really into duck face selfies and that kind of narcissistic stuff; the internet is already full of that. I wanted to do something different – especially something that might make people smile.

What’s the reaction been like to your photographs?

It’s been amazing. It's the part that makes me want to travel even more and take more pictures – or maybe I’m just looking for some excuses. It’s so great receiving messages everyday from people of all ages, from all parts of the world, telling me how happy the llama makes them feel. I quickly realised how easy it is to actually make someone happy. We’re all missing something this simple and pure in today’s chaotic world. I think we are all kind of lost in it and llama reminds us that the world and life are actually still beautiful.

Do you ever get funny or inquisitive looks when setting up the shots?

Of course! People think that I’m a little weird, I guess!! They’re like: "Look at this woman taking her stuffed llama's pictures, laughing at herself and having so much fun. Is she a freak?!" But then they come to me, ask questions and start laughing with me. So my 'putting smiles on faces' motto is not something limited to social media either, it also applies to real life before I've even posted a picture on Instagram.

Do you have a favourite photograph you’ve captured?

I love all the pictures; they’re all so special to me because they all have their own special moments and memories that make me smile. But if I have to pick just one...? It’d be this one (above).

How many countries has he been to?

So far, we’ve been to the USA, Colombia, Turkey and Italy.

What’s the most adventurous thing he has done?

He’s climbed 750 steps in Guatapé, Colombia, to see this breathtaking view (pictured below)!

Do you have a favourite place you have travelled to together?

I’d say Colombia, because it was the first time for both of us. I’ve already been to the others without him before.

Where is home for you?

I’m from Istanbul, but we live in LA.

Where’s next on the list?

It’s always a surprise!
