The Best Foods to Try in Japan
During our short stay in Tokyo, we had quickly come to realise that you can never eat too much of anything in this busy city. Where there is food, we had to try it! And with the Japanese city's mouth-watering dishes and diverse influences, you will end up leaving having wished you had lived here all your life...
Unsurprisingly, Japan has the best ramen joints in the world, with more soup bases and noodle strands than you you could ever imagine. And it's all delicious, from the tasty tonkotsu to the almighty shoyu, but what really knocked it out of the park for us was the infamous tsukemen dipping noodles. Two bowls, one with plain egg noodles and the other with a dense gravy-like broth, topped with a boiled egg and slices of tender pork. Together they are a match made in food heaven! As you entwine the noodles in the broth, it coats it with the most intensely delicious flavours that will just send your taste buds wild. You can find loads of ramen joints all over Tokyo, in every corner, just follow your nose and it will lead you there!
It was hard not to fall in love with Japanese desserts. In fact, you can’t come to Tokyo without trying its unique and moreish puddings, in particular the infamous mochi (a kind of rice cake) and its varieties of bingsu (shaved ice), perfect for cooling you down on a hot summer day. Whatever desserts you decide to try, we would suggest the matcha flavour. The green tea powder element, when added to your dessert, will create a whole new dimension and taste – you will never see a cake, frappuccino or ice cream the same way again, trust us!
One of the most anticipated foods in Japan for us was the almighty Kobe beef. We had heard so much about this tender piece of red meat and couldn’t wait to get our hands on it, or rather, mouths? We were told to try the A5, the best quality and most tender piece you will ever eat and boy, it did not disappoint! We have never eaten anything so juicy and sumptuous. With every mouthful it would just melt in your mouth, minimal chewing necessary.
We were lucky enough to try Kobe sashimi – thinly slice prime rib – for the first time too, and it was a moment we will never forget. If you are a meat lover just like us it a must-try, although make sure you do a little research and pick the right restaurant.
Last but by no means least, when in Tokyo you just have to eat sushi. With the Pacific Ocean on its doorstep you are always guaranteed fresh seafood, so never hesitate to try that delicious raw piece of tuna or salmon because, trust us, you will never taste sushi so clean cut. We were able to eat some of the freshest sushi and sashimi dishes you can ever imagine, the flavours were intensely delicious. And with a huge variety and unique restaurants to it eat it in, whether you’re having it for breakfast lunch or dinner – or even as a snack – you can never go wrong with the delicate and fresh taste of sushi in Japan.
So, when visiting Japan and touring the busy and beautiful city of Tokyo, be sure to follow your heart... and your stomach when it starts to rumble.
