An Expert’s Guide to Southwest Australia

January 17, 2017 by Flight Centre UK

“Here the sunsets over the ocean are spectacular. And you’re spoilt with remote deserted beaches and boutique wineries. There’s nowhere quite like it.”

This is how Alexandra Theyer describes Southwest Australia. She has worked at Flight Centre for five years and is a bit of an Expert when it comes to the Land Down Under. Before joining us, she spent two years travelling in Australia and New Zealand, and last year was lucky enough to travel on the iconic Ghan railway. Here, she shares her top tips and need to know information when it comes to exploring Southwest Australia:

Perth Airport…

…is the gateway to Western Australia, with both domestic and international flights.

Hire a car or a campervan

This enables you to visit the quieter, more hidden beauty spots. Southwest Australia can be remote, so relying on transfers and public transport can be costly.

Get the best food and service

You can do just that when you dine at one of the many vineyards, like the lakeside restaurant at Cape Lodge. This modern diner serves garden-to-kitchen produce, paired with the best wine from the vineyard.

Visit the Busselton Jetty

Best done when you drive to or from Perth. At 1,841m, it’s the longest wooden structure in the Southern Hemisphere, and has an underwater observatory at the end.

Take the Bushtucker Winery & Brewery tour

You can’t go wrong with tastings at wineries and working breweries, plus treats from Margaret River Chocolate Company and an award-winning cheese factory. Seashells Yallingup is a relaxed surfers’ paradise with one- or two-bedroom apartments, ideal for families and groups.

Drive in the day

If possible, plan your itinerary to avoid driving in the dark. A lot of Australian wildlife likes to roam around at night – especially kangaroos.

Give the wet weather a miss

Southwestern Australia is a year-round destination, but I prefer to go between November and May when the sun is out and there is less rainfall.
