Joshua Cheung, stylist and former fashion director at luxury mag L’Officiel Singapore, opens up his little black book of boutiques and style secrets
Singapore’s global social media profile may show a picture of futuristic skyscrapers and ultra-clean shopping malls, but at its heart is a bubbling multiculturalism that the city’s insiders thrive on. This, coupled with a competitive drive for ‘nowness’, has led to the island nation’s newly acquired status as one of Asia’s hit-list destinations for cutting-edge food, landscaping, architecture and shopping.
“One of the most exciting things to happen this year is the opening of Design Orchard,” says Joshua Cheung. It’s set to showcase more than 60 home-grown and emerging designers in a development on Orchard Road, a mile-long shopping mecca with everything from flagship stores to bijou concessions. While you're in the area, check out contemporary womenswear at Beyond the Vines and crafts at Supermama.
Then there’s The Shoppes at iconic hotel complex Marina Bay Sands, a paean to Singaporean luxury. “Light and airy with wide walkways and high glass ceilings – and an indoor canal with gondolas to take you from A to B – it’s lined with glittering boutiques.” On top of that – almost literally – the resort has unbeatable views from its observation deck, shows at the ArtScience Museum and fabulous restaurants.
Or escape the glitz at Haji Lane, a narrow street with a bohemian vibe and colourful shopfronts. Pause at Juice Clinic for a mid-shop energy boost while you admire the murals. “I discover new cafés and quaint stores every time I go,” says Joshua
