China’s Rainbow Mountains are the epitome of ‘WOW’. Beloved for a confection of colours (not unlike a rainbow) these iconic mountains offer an otherworldly experience. Formed over millennia, this is easily one of our favourite natural wonders.
2. Hinatuan Enchanted River, Philippines
The legend goes that the Hinatuan Enchanted River, hidden in the Philippine jungle, is full of unique fish that can’t be caught. And with the river’s mesmerising display of sapphire and jade colours, it’s easy to get swept up in the mystery of it all. The water is an eyewatering 80-feet deep and meanders into the Pacific Ocean.
3. Isola Bella Gardens & Palace, Italy
To experience real-life, Italian baroque gardens at their finest, head to Isola Bella. Built on a foundation of water, this royal palace and surrounding landscapes are brimming with style. Discover an elegant mix of beautiful stone structures and vibrant flowers, all leading to Teatro Massimo, the gardens’ exquisite centrepiece.
4. Rocky Mountains, Canada
Stretching across the eastern provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, the mighty Rocky Mountains are truly Canada’s crowning jewel. Whether you’re cruising down the Icefields Parkway, past glaciers and turquoise mirror lakes like Maligne and Louise, searching for grizzlies, black bears and elk, or taking on the miles of hiking and ski trails, there’s so much to get immersed in. For a touch of decadence, consider riding through the mountains in style on the luxurious Rocky Mountaineer train.
5. Doha, Qatar
Hot on the heels of the Euros, we’re pretty excited about the World Cup this year (come on Southgate!). Enter: Qatar. Hosting the tournament in winter for the first time, we can’t help but be tempted by the idea of some sunshine in the middle of November. So whether you’re admiring the Museum of Islamic Art, strolling the Corniche, or catching that long-awaited England game, this is a 2022 winter-sun destination that shouldn’t be overlooked.
6. Hitachi Seaside Park, Japan
With its wooded walking and biking trails, Hitachi Seaside Park is perfect for soaking up Japan’s great outdoors. Spread out over 860 acres, the park is packed with wide-open green spaces. We recommend visiting in autumn, when the park really comes alive with colourful blooms.
7. Antelope Canyon, Arizona, USA
The red rock landscapes of Arizona are known for their breathtaking sites. That’s why we love Antelope Canyon. This geological, underground wonder can be discovered on a tour. Wander amid swirling sandstone and, if you’re lucky, admire the light beams shining through the rocks. This is one you won’t want to forget your camera for.
8. Petra, Jordan
Once a thriving trade hub, the ‘Lost City’ now sits in ruins, its iconic façade carved into Jordan’s vibrant orange sandstone. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, a visit to Petra is like travelling back in time and walking in the shoes of the Nabataean empire. Movie lovers will remember it from a whole host of cinematic blockbusters, including Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade.

12. Waitomo Glow-worm Caves, New Zealand
A unique underworld of stalactites and stalagmites, here you’ll marvel at the Cathedral – the caves’ tallest chamber – before embarking on a boat ride through New Zealand's glowworm grotto. Look to the roof, embrace silence (these critters hate noise), then watch as a thousand tiny lights pierce the darkness. Magic!
13. St Petersburg, Russia
Tsarist and Bolshevik revolutionary history abound in Russia’s former imperial capital. Starkly beautiful in winter, we recommend taking a quick trip to St Petersburg’s frozen seaside, where you can walk out onto the Gulf of Finland and retrace the footsteps of Lenin as he made his way back from exile to fire-up the Russian Revolution.
14. Reykjavik, Iceland
Head north to Iceland’s capital city, and experience a confection of alien landscapes. Visit in the summer to experience volcano descents, glacier walks and the midnight sun, where the days last almost 24 hours.
