Day 1
UK to Atlanta
Days 1-2
Atlanta
Explore the vibrant city of Atlanta, the capital of Georgia and a city filled with southern charm and sophistication. Atlanta is divided into distinct neighbourhoods and full of pretty trees and elegant homes, so soak up the rich heritage and visit the abundance of attractions with your Atlanta City Pass, which includes Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca Cola and Atlanta Zoo. Discover more about the Civil War, explore the surrounding forests on a hike or learn about African-American history, this was the birthplace of Martin Luther King Junior after all. After absorbing the history, time for a bit of refreshment: Atlanta is chock-full of excellent restaurants and luxury shopping malls, so there’s plenty to choose from.
Days 3-4
Charleston
Discover the natural beauty of South Carolina’s bucolic countryside before arriving in the refined coastal city of Charleston. This historic treasure played a starring role in shaping the state’s history and boasts pretty heritage buildings and pristine beaches. This is a city for a relaxing stroll among the charming churches, a horse-and-carriage ride past sun-dappled, wooden-shuttered houses or a lingering dinner with the scent of jasmine and honeysuckle drifting on the breeze. Admire the antebellum architecture and browse the vintage boutiques by day, then bar hop on King Street, Charleston’s favourite thoroughfare, by night.
Days 5-7
Hilton Head Island
Head down to the seaside and relax on Hilton Head Island – the ideal beachfront retreat. Spend fun-filled days lazing on the sand and paddling in the surf on over 12 miles of pretty Atlantic Ocean beachfront. Those looking for something more energetic can chose from hiking, fishing and kayaking, while those in need of a culture fix should check out the various galleries, museums and theatres here. In addition, the island boasts 350 tennis courts, 24 golf courses and 250 restaurants in a small space. Wildlife enthusiasts can even seek out the alligators, deer, sea turtles, manatees and dolphins that inhabit the island and its waters.
Days 8-9
Savannah
Savannah is surrounded by trees and swamps, not far from the coast. Savannah’s historic antebellum architecture was thankfully saved by a deal between General Sherman and the mayor in 1864, allowing Sherman’s men to enter the town, as long as they left the buildings alone. It’s a curious place with a mixture of history and greenery, and plenty of bars thrown in to liven up the long summer evenings. Taste the hearty southern food cooked home-style at Mrs Wilkes’s Dining Room - there’s always a queue for the fried chicken and okra gumbo served in this cosy eatery. Even Barack Obama has eaten here.
