Your Example Itinerary

Day 1

Fly from the UK to Anchorage

Day 2

Pick up your motorhome and drive to Palmer, where you’ll spend your second night. Along the way, you can choose to call in at the small towns of Eagle River or Chugiak, or get a closer view of Knick Glacier on a thrilling airboat tour. When you pass through the Eklutna Flats, keep an eye out for Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains, as well as Pioneer Peak, towering 1,950m above you.

Days 3-4

Denali National Park

Leaving Palmer behind, continue to the forests of Denali National Park, six million acres of wilderness , covered with patches of forest and rugged mountains, including the snow-capped peak of Mount McKinley, North America’s tallest mountain at 6,190m. Keep a look out for wildlife as you explore, either on foot, white water rafting, on safari or in your own vehicle. It’s a beautiful place, take your time to appreciate the peace, quiet and vastness of it all.

Days 5-6

Before you depart from Denali National Park, you might choose to join a Tundra Wildlife Tour. Look out for bears, caribou, moose, sheep and wolves, not to mention a wide variety of birdlife, all against a glorious mountain backdrop. Afterwards, continue through the forests and mountains, past the towns of Healy, Nenana and Ester, an old gold mining camp, to Fairbanks, a former gold rush town and about the closest this area gets to a city.

Day 7

Leaving Fairbanks, you’ll pass the suburb of ‘North Pole’, which truly cashes in on its festive connotations with a giant Santa statue, candy cane decorations and quaint, red and white themed houses. On your way to Paxson/Glennallen, your stop for the night, perhaps swing by the Copper River to fish for salmon, or set off on a hiking, rafting or scenic flight adventure.

Day 8

Admire the gorgeous scenery along the Richardson Highway on your way to Valdez. You’ll pass some stunning views of the Wrangell Mountains and have time to stop off at the Worthington Glacier and Keystone Canyon, pausing to admire its waterfalls. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, Valdez is a peaceful, if snowy place, with plenty of dramatic landscapes to admire and glaciers, harbours and museums to explore, including nearby Prince William Sound.

Day 9

Today you’ll ride the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry through Prince William Sound to Whitter (own expense), from where you’ll drive the mesmerising Seward Highway, past towering peaks and deep blue lakes, to Seward. Along the way, perhaps stop for a boat cruise or a hike to the creeping icy face of Portage Glacier, or swing by the Begich Boggs Visitor Center, where you can walk through an ice cave, touch an iceberg and even look at ice worms, should you so wish.

Days 10-11

Hop on board a boat and cruise among the calm waters of Kenai Fjords National Park, one of North America’s most impressive national parks and home to 38 creeping glaciers and huge, icy faces. Take a boat trip onto the fjords and look out for seabirds, and if you’re really lucky, a whale. Once you’ve had your fill of wildlife and nature, continue to Anchorage for the final two nights of your Alaska adventure. Here you can choose to visit the museums and exhibitions, including the Anchorage Museum of History and Art and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

Days 12-13

Depart Anchorage and return to the UK.
