Though it’s just a ten-minute drive from downtown Kota Kinabalu, this resort feels wonderfully far-flung – and has its own private beach. There’s an excellent kids’ club, swimming pool, and a splash-park with water slides for all ages.

Kinabalu Mountain View Room
With views of Mount Kinabalu – Borneo’s highest mountain – these rooms combine natural splendour with all-out opulence. You can stretch out in the kingsize bed, catch some sun on the private balcony, and soothe your muscles in the deep-soak tub. It’s just as blissful as it sounds.

Kinabalu Sea View Room
These rooms have all the style and amenities of their Kinabalu neighbours, yet with South China Sea views instead. Don’t fancy heading to the Sunset Bar at twilight? You can enjoy those same spectacular vistas from the comfort of your private balcony, with a minibar tipple in hand.

Tanjung Sea View Room
With its contemporary artwork and sea-view terrace, this is one swish island retreat – surrounded by glorious gardens and swaying palm trees. In true Shangri-La style, the kingsize bed is sublime – while the en suite features a deep-soak bath and separate rainfall shower.

Kinabalu Club Sea View
Upgrade to a Kinabalu Club suite, and you’ll enjoy premium privileges aplenty: VIP check-in, fresh fruit delivered daily, and complimentary refreshments all day at the Club Lounge. All this, and a sumptuous suite with glittering sea views.

Tanjung Executive Suite
With its huge sea-view balcony, double marble bathroom (with tub), and separate sitting/dining area, this suite is one of the best in the house. It comes with membership to the Kinabalu Club too, which includes complimentary refreshments, concierge services and much more.

Little ones love the splash-play area, with its slides and fountains – plus a ‘water battle’ area with water balloon launchers. On a hot day, it’s just the ticket. The beach is safe for paddling in too, with plenty of soft sand for crafting that perfect castle. The resort’s kids’ club is a hit, too: a haven of arts-and-crafts fun, team games and storytelling. It’s open from 10am until 6pm, and babysitting services are available out-of-hours – so you can sneak off for a romantic supper or sunset daiquiris by the pool. Most of the restaurants offer children’s menus, and Cool Box serves the best ice cream sundaes in town.

You haven’t seen a sunset until you’ve witnessed one at Kota Kinabalu: this stretch of coastline has some of the most sublime skies our Travel Consultants have ever seen (high praise indeed) – and the Sunset Bar is the best place to see them from. Make sure you reserve a table, because this spot gets busy: one glance at the excellent menu of cocktails and tapas-style bites will show you why. Settle in and enjoy the show – before heading to Coco-Joe’s for juicy steaks and succulent seafood, or Chang Palace for a sumptuous Chinese spread.

Why we recommend Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa

For a treat, our Travel Consultants recommend Chi, The Spa, for a soothing massage or refreshing facial: it’s set on its very own island, and the hibiscus-infused body wraps are sublime. The accommodation is split into two areas – the Kinabalu and Tanjung wings. The main difference between the two is the décor: the former is more traditional, with Sabah-inspired artwork, while the latter is more contemporary in style. Wherever you choose to stay, incredible views stretch out in every direction – of the ocean, nearby islands, and Mount Kinabalu – and the Sunset Bar is one of the city’s hottest spots to toast the twilight. There’s also a fantastic array of complimentary daily activities, plus a pitch-and-putt golf course, health club and tennis courts. At the privately-run STAR Marina, you can sign up for watersports and scuba diving, and even a hair-raising speedboat ride around the bay.
