Your Example Itinerary
Fly from the UK to Phnom Penh
Arrive into Phnom Penh and transfer to your hotel. At 6pm you’ll meet your guide and the rest of your group ready for your Cambodia and Vietnam adventure. Have dinner in Friends the Restaurant, an organisation supporting local disadvantaged children. The next day you’ll head off on a city tour taking in the best of Phnom Penh’s sights, including the Tuol Sleng Prison Museum, the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda.
Fly on to Siem Reap, the gateway to the temples of Angkor. Spend the next three days exploring these archaeological wonders with your guide. Take in the huge human faces of Angkor Thom, the gothic towers of Bayon and the mystical temple of Ta Prohm, which seems to have been taken over completely by the jungle. You’ll also have time to watch the sun set over the temples and taste the delicious local street food in Siem Reap.
Ho Chi Minh City
Leaving Cambodia behind, fly on to Ho Chi Minh City and start exploring. With your guide, you’ll head down into the darkness of the Cu Chi Tunnels, once used by the Viet Cong. You’ll visit the Reunification Palace, site of South Vietnam’s surrender at the end of the Vietnam War, and you’ll take in the military equipment of the War Remnants Museum. You’ll also enjoy a city tour with your guide and have the chance to sample some of Vietnam’s tasty local cuisine.
Fly north to Danang, where you’ll call in at the lovely My Khe Beach and have the chance to explore the pretty Marble Mountains. Later, head on to Hoi An, your base for the next two nights. Here, you’ll join your guide for a tour of the town, taking in the colourful architecture and the quaint shop houses. Along the way, you’ll see the Japanese Covered Bridge, the Chinese Assembly Hall and a historic house and museum. There are plenty of souvenir shops here too, selling everything from paintings to tailored suits.
Fly on to Hanoi, Vietnam’s charming capital. Here, join your leader for a guided tour where you’ll take in the Temple of Literature, the One Pillar Pagoda and the former home of Ho Chi Minh. After lunch at KOTO, another organisation assisting underprivileged children, you’ll have a free afternoon top sample the excellent street food, wander the parks or hire a bike and go for a cycle down the city’s side streets.
Drive eastwards towards Halong Bay, a beautiful region of towering karst peaks carpeted in emerald forests, all rising majestically from blue waters. On arrival, you’ll board your overnight cruise and set off exploring the caves and rock formations. Later, dine on board and sleep overnight in your cabin, bobbing gently on the water. The next day, wake up among the peace and quiet and watch the world go by as you sail back to shore.
Drive back to Hanoi, where you’ll watch a unique water-puppet performance, something of a must-see for visitors to Hanoi. In the evening you’re free to try a refreshing glass of Bia Hoi (the local beer) or wander the restaurants and bars in the Old Quarter. Take the time to tick off any sights you missed before – perhaps head down to Hoan Kiem Lake and watch the locals practising tai chi on the water’s edge, or browse the markets and sample the local pho.
Depart Hanoi and return to the UK
