Explore the hilltop castles and fairytale châteaux in European-style Quebec City. Wander the cobbled streets and discover the 17th-century houses as you take a tour of the only walled city north of Mexico. Quebec City is at the heart of Francophone culture in North America and you can feel it in everything from the cuisine to the architecture and the history. Visit the World Heritage-listed Citadelle, walk the three-mile-long long fortifications, stroll along the riverfront Terrasse Dufferin and admire the fantasy Fairmont Le Château Frontenac hotel. In warm weather the Quebecois streets come alive and the locals flock to the St Lawrence River, the fresh outdoor pools and the surrounding national parks to cool off. If you’re here in August you might be lucky enough to catch the SAQ Festival, a re-enactment of life in 17th and 18th-century France that consists of colourful parades, historical shows and, of course, delicious local food.
Head to the pretty peaks and dense forests of Mont Tremblant, where the stunning Parc National du Mont Tremblant is home to 206 bird species and offers stunning vistas of forests, lakes, waterfalls and rivers, criss-crossed with excellent mountain biking and canoe trails. Perhaps ride the gondola for sweeping panoramic views of the Laurentian Mountains, or follow the numerous hiking trails to the Rouge River and cool down with a spot of canoeing. There’s never a dull moment here, as a whole range of exhilarating outdoor activities will keep you entertained, from cycling, horse riding and mini golf, to alpine luging, rock climbing and river rafting.
Montréal comes alive in summer, so take advantage of the long evenings and taste the delicious French-inspired cuisine during some alfresco street dining. Afterwards, why not watch the impressive street performers, or maybe just view the sunset from an urban beach. Be sure to build up your appetite for the tasty treats you’ll sample on your foodie Journey down the city’s main street, where you’ll notice an abundance of Parisian cafés and boutiques. A further glimpse into the French delights of the city can be found in the cobblestone alleyways and heritage buildings of Old Montréal. But it’s not just the French who have had an influence here: Montréal is a festival hotspot, celebrating everything from Asian cinema to Lebanese cuisine, always promoting a strong creative edge, so see what’s on, and make sure you are a part of it.
