Day 3
Dali
Watch the countryside roll by on the bus journey out to Dali. Home to the Bai people – a traditional minority tribe renowned for their craftsmanship – the township has a contagious laidback charm. Walk cobblestoned streets, admire ancient stone houses and discover the town’s many historic sites. Those feeling adventurous can go boating on Erhai Lake, hike in the mountains beyond Dali or cycle through the scenic surrounds.
Days 4-5
Shaxi
Once an important stop on the old Tea Horse Trail, the ancient town of Shaxi radiates a simple beauty. Stroll the quiet country roads, admire the original walled town gates and watch the locals at work in the market square. Follow the mountain trails out to Shizong Temple and enjoy a picnic lunch amid the striking Danxia landscape. Later, why not head back to the town square and join the locals for an evening of chit-chat – and maybe even some impromptu song and dance!
Days 6-7
Tiger Leaping Gorge
Journey past the upper reaches of the Yangtze River to some of China's most spectacular natural scenery. Stare down in awe at the raging Jinsha River thundering through the magnificent Tiger Leaping Gorge. The surrounding mountains are just as impressive. Don your hiking boots and follow the path down through the gorge, passing local villages such as the enchanting Ben Di Wan.
Days 8-9
Lijiang
Located in the northwest of the Yunnan Province, picturesque Lijiang was once the capital of the famed Naxi Kingdom. Take a walk around the Old Town and admire the quaint cobblestoned streets, narrow canals and intricately decorated wooden houses. Spend the night right in the middle of this historic neighbourhood. Take a walk up to the Wangu Pagoda on Lion Hill for a great view of the city. In the evening you’ll have the opportunity to catch a performance of the local Naxi orchestra.
