Your Example Itinerary
Day 1
Fly from the UK to Halifax and check into your hotel.
Day 2
Halifax
Start exploring Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, by wandering along its historic waterfront. The city was founded in 1749 when it was used as an entry point for those arriving by ship from Europe; learn more in the fascinating Canadian Museum of Immigration. While you’re in town, you’ll join a whale watching cruise around Halifax Harbour, where you might spot dolphins, seals, humpback or minke whales.
Day 3
Moncton
Take a walk along the lovely beaches of Moncton and explore its various museums. The sea here is thought to have some of the warmest temperatures in the country, so if the weather’s fine, go for a paddle or even a cooling dip. Try the local produce at the farmer’s market, test out the local eateries or, for something a little quirky, drive down to the Magnetic Hill Optical Illusion, a slope where items appear to roll uphill. But is it all it seems?
Days 4-5
Saint John
Check out the panoramic views of Saint John, the largest city in New Brunswick, from Fort Howe, built during the American Revolution to defend the town in the case of invasion. You can visit this National Historic Park and discover more, or check out the New Brunswick Museum, which also houses a collection of whale skeletons. If you prefer outdoorsy activities, walk along the red-bricked Harbour Passage promenade for excellent sea views.
Days 6-7
Saint Andrews
Relax among the forests in seaside Saint Andrews, sometimes known as St Andrews by-the-Sea. Many houses here still date from the time of the town’s original settlement in 1783, and some buildings reached here by barge, floating across the sea from New England. When not learning the local history, you can take a walk around the relaxing Kingsbrae Garden, filled with sculptures, birds, cafes, art galleries and of course numerous gardens across its 27 acres.
Days 8-9
Fredericton
Walk around the historic district of Fredericton, New Brunswick’s chilled out capital. This is a good place to kick back for a day or two among the grand buildings, twinkling fountains and leafy sidewalks. With two universities in town, there are plenty of decent and good value eateries, while you can learn more about the city’s colonial history in the Historic Garrison District, a national Historic Site also home to some offbeat craft shops.
Days 10-11
Digby
Digby is known for its delightful waterfront, a great spot to hang out and watch the comings and goings of the fishermen. When not following the numerous coastal trails, you can spend your time feasting on freshly-caught seafood in relaxed waterfront restaurants. Try the local scallops, which you’ll find on pretty much every menu going, perhaps fried, seared, or baked St Jaques style, where they are served in a scallop shell.
Days 10-11
Return to Halifax and depart for the UK.
