The World Design Capital of 2014, Cape Town is heaving with design inspiration and inventive, local products. We love Hout Couture’s (‘hout’ means wood in Afrikaans) eco-friendly wooden framed sunglasses, stocked at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and all over the city. houtcouture.com

Dubai

After you’ve shopped the colossal Mall of the Emirates, head to the ancient souks on either side of the Dubai Creek. Seek out slippers and silks at the Textile Souk, oud at the Perfume Souk and cardamom at the Spice Souk. Take a boat from one side to the other.

Hanoi

Get your best bargaining head on and visit Craft Link in Van Mieu. This not-for-profit organisation helps poor hillside tribes and craft producers get a fair wage. You’ll find silk lanterns, lacquer vases, hemp and silk cushions, bamboo cookware, local pottery and more. craftlink.com.vn

Istanbul is a mecca for world-class shopping. Yastik by Rifat Ozbek sells the fashion designer’s exotic cushions (yastikbyrifatozbek.com), Haremlique offers embroidered linens (haremlique.com) and Haci Bekir has delicacies such as Turkish Delight (hacibekir.com).

Sydney

Simon Johnson in Pyrmont has been selling to the world’s best chefs and foodies for around 20 years. This ‘posh grocer’ has everything from white truffle oil to lemon salt flakes, and also stocks kitchen equipment. simonjohnson.com
