You think you know what to expect from the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World? For a city with nearly 40 million visitors a year, you can bet your bottom dollar (and you probably will end up betting it) that there’ll be something in this glitzy megalopolis to get your pulse racing. Travel blogger Hayley Griffiths fills us in on the ‘most Vegas’ things to do in Las Vegas.
Yes, there are nearly 200,000 slot machines in Las Vegas, but it’s a whole lot more than just gambling. For starters, there are hundreds of world-class shows all vying for your attention with big-name singers, inspiring acrobats, displays of magic and freaky contortionists to make your whole body wince. Plus there are some of the best bars and nightclubs in the world on the 4-mile stretch of real estate known as ‘The Strip’.
So in order for you to make the most of your time in ‘Sin City’, I’ve put together my top things you absolutely, definitely must not miss out on.
Watch the sun set over The Strip
There are countless spots in Vegas to partake in drinking a beverage or two, but if you’re in the world’s craziest city, you can’t beat a view of the most over-the-top attraction in the west of the USA – the Las Vegas Strip. My favourite place to watch the sun sink in the desert sky with a drink in hand is MiX Lounge at the top of THEhotel Mandalay Bay. It’s situated at the south end of the strip and has striking views for miles, and weirdly, the toilets face outwards, giving you a view of the hotel next door. Let’s hope they can’t see in!
Become Rambo for the day
In America, nothing says ‘man’ more than shooting your very own live firearm, and thanks to shooting range The Gun Store, your ‘man’ dreams can now become a reality (even if, in fact, you are a woman). Shooting an automatic or semi-automatic AK-47 (with a highly-trained instructor, of course) will put hairs on your chest but if you really want to take things to another level, why not try the M249 beltfed SAW; the largest and only beltfed machine gun in Vegas. Picture Rambo in action and you’re on the right track.
Take a tour of the city in a stretch limo
OK, this might seem a bit extravagant but extravagance is what Las Vegas was built on! Surprisingly affordable if there’s a group of you, it’s the only way to be seen in Sin City. Lots of companies offer tours that take in some of the city’s most famous sights including the ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign, the Bellagio water fountains and Fremont Street, which is famous for its evening laser light shows. You’ll feel like a movie star, but let’s just hope for your sake it’s not from the movie ‘The Hangover’.
Operate some heavy machinery
Bringing new meaning to the words ‘adult playground’, the folks over at Dig This allow you to get behind the wheel of their bulldozers and diggers and go on the destructive rampage of your dreams. You can throw tyres, drive over a “teeter totter” and play “Bucket Basketball”! If you have no idea what any of this means, just believe me when I say that this is something that you’ll probably never get to do again in your life, so go nuts!
Bet everything you can afford to lose on red or black
I remember it well. 4.30 am coming out of PURE nightclub at Caesars Palace, a little worse for wear but feeling lucky. Passing the roulette tables I fancied my chances so whipped out a crisp $20 note and proceeded to place a bet. Now which of the lucky colours to pick: red or black? Well, it’s 50/50, right? So decision made. “$20 on black please, kind lady”. I waited with eager anticipation for the ball to settle. Now was my time. I was ready to be rich. “Green zero” announced the croupier. Oh dear. No win for me, and even worse, it didn’t matter which colour I went for, I would have lost anyway. Did I love it despite that? Yes. Would I do it again? Yes. But lesson learned: The house always wins!
So these are my most Vegas things to do in Las Vegas. If you’ve got some more (and I’m sure there’ll be plenty!), feel free to leave a comment below, and remember; what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!
