Instatravellers: the Photographic Flight Attendant

September 25, 2015 by Helen Winter

As a flight attendant, Katrin Tochtermann travels all over the globe while the furthest most of us travel is to the printer and back. Her beautiful Instagram is full of pictures captured on her stopovers with work, as well as personal jaunts. From the colours of Marrakesh to the plains to Tanzania, you’ll find her off to somewhere new not long after she’s arrived…

We caught up with Katrin from @travelerslittletreasures to find out what life as a flight attendant is like, and what she thinks of the world.

My apartment in Frankfurt, Germany, is home to me…

But to be honest I hardly spent much time there. For me it is more a place where I keep my things and repack my suitcase. Home for me can be anywhere and nowhere. I always bring my laptop and my pillow with me on my travels and make myself homely wherever I am. Home can also be people, if I am with friends, with people I love, then anywhere can feel like home.

I started training to be a flight attendant over two years ago…

I’ve had a fantastic time so far. I am glad I made the decision to follow my dreams and give it a try.

I work for a German carrier called Condor…

Our destinations are mainly beach-type holidays – so we are quite lucky to have our layovers at beautiful places where people spend their yearly vacation, such as the Maldives, the Caribbean etc.

What I love about my job is that it never gets boring…

Each day at work is different: Different colleagues, passengers and so on. I couldn’t imagine working in an office and having a 9 to 5 routine. My biggest passion is to travel the world and see different places, taste the food, learn about the culture and my job gives me the opportunity to do that.

I like to spend my time off in a city…

I enjoy asking locals what their favourite things to do in the city are and always try to explore things that a little bit off the beaten track. Go to markets, spend time in cafés and restaurants and check out the museums and shops.

I have visited 42 countries so far…

I’ve travelled to some through my job and some in my own time. I am only 21 so that is quite a lot already, but then if you look at a world map it is still a really small percent of the world, so I’m still eager to discover more new places.

The Maldives was the place that surprised me the most, it was absolutely overwhelming…

It was my first long-haul flight and I was able to sit in the cockpit for the landing. Of course I have seen pictures of the Maldives before, but it was even more beautiful when I saw it with my own eyes.

My favourite place for food is definitely Thailand…

I love Thai food. I really enjoy all the different curries, the spicy dishes prepared with lots of fresh ingredients, the delicious fruit and cold coconuts. I was in Bangkok for vacation this year and loved to stop at all the small street food stalls and try new dishes.

When it comes to shopping…

I love to stroll around markets and go in small shops. London and New York City were great places to check out some upcoming new designers and I loved haggling at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.

I love to return to places where I know people who live there…

After you have visited all the major sights it is lovely just to hang out with friends, stroll around and go for coffee. Amsterdam especially never gets old and I also love going back to the big cities in Asia like Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur because I love the hustle and bustle.

If I had to live in another country…

I would love to move to somewhere beautiful in Southeast Asia. Before I became a flight attendant I worked in a small resort on an island in Malaysia and really loved it. I dream of opening a hostel or guest house in Bali or Thailand one day.
