Everyone loves a sailing dog, right? Well Sergi Basoli certainly does. And this month we’ve been chatting to this pooch-loving Instatraveller about his three-year mission to kayak along the Mediterranean Coast with only his pup, Nirvana, for company. Two years in, he’s been telling us all about their journey so far, in particular how they’ve managed to clock up nearly 12,000 Instagram followers…
Where did you meet Nirvana?
In the streets of Alghero, in Sardinia.
How old was she?
Around one year.
When did she start accompanying you on adventures?
From the moment I took her with me to the vet. I asked her if the dog was going to grow more and she said that was already in adult state, so that was fine for taking her with me on the kayak. That was April 2014, two years ago.
Have you photographed her on your travels from the very start?
More or less, yes. When I knew she was going to be with me, I presented her to my family friends and followers and, from that moment, she’s been the star of the trip.
Was the decision to photograph Nirvana triggered by anything in particular, or were you just keen to document your journey together?
I’m the one with the camera, so having her around was a good excuse to put her in prime position, and people reacted positively.
Is she easy to photograph?
I had to learn how to train a dog, since navigation can get difficult, and she needs to follow my instructions for the safety of both of us. That means she is very disciplined, and telling her to stay in a particular place is no big deal anymore.
What’s the reaction been like to your photographs/Instagram page?
This dog is a heart’s thief!
Do you have a favourite photograph of Nirvana?
This is a good one (below), with her beautiful eyes.
What’s the most adventurous thing she has done?
She does get wet sometimes, and she has to wait for us to get to land to get dry, but she has her jacket to try and avoid it. She also does a lot of climbing and jumping into the water, as she likes to walk along the coast as I paddle.
Do you have a favourite place you have travelled to together?
Well, Sardinia is always in our hearts. And, in general, Italy is very kind with dogs. What she loves most are the mountains and walks in the forest, so we try to venture inland when we arrive on a new beach.
How many countries have you visited?
Along this journey: Spain, France and Italy.
Where’s next on the list?
Along the coast, next is Slovenia, and then Croatia.
