Instatraveller: a Fleet of Travelling Cars

November 10, 2016 by Alexandra Gregg

Who doesn’t love playing with toy cars? Old or young, kid or adult, it’s pretty fun vrooming them about the place, pretending you’re a miniature rally driver or something like that. We reckon that’s why we love Kim Leuenberger’s Instagram feed, @travellingcars, so much. She’s taken her fleet of tiny motors and made them the focal point of her travels, with great success too. She now has 67,000 followers and counting on her Instagram page. Fascinated by the idea, we caught up with Kim about what got her into this unique take on travel photography:

When did it all begin?

It all started about five years ago when I was still at high school. I had a toy car on my shelf which was a gift from my parents and I had just received my first SLR, and I took everything out into the garden to take pictures. I was basically just playing with toys and setting up scenes, and I realised how well the car worked in the shot. I then set up the Instagram account and it all took off from there. Now it is like an addiction!

Where was your favourite place to shoot?

My favourite places to shoot were Dorset and Scotland and obviously Catalonia in Spain, where it all began, because they were my first pictures.

What’s the reaction been like?

I’ve had a very good reaction to my pictures. I do get a lot of strange looks when I’m setting up shots! I’m lying on the floor taking a picture of a toy car, so of course people ask what I am doing. It actually doesn’t happen so much in London – I think people are used to seeing stranger things! But I have so much fun with it that I don’t mind.

Where is home for you?

I grew up in Switzerland but I’m now studying in London.

How many countries have you been to, and where’s next?

I have so many cars, I can’t even count how many. I have been to around 30 countries, and next on my list is California and Canada. I have not done much of the USA, so it would be great to go there.

Why do you do it?

The cars are like my little bubble. It’s like self-therapy, and escapism. If it were to become boring, I would be doing it wrong. I have so much fun taking the pictures and to think that other people get enjoyment from them too is wonderful.
