South Africa is a vast and beautiful country with contrasting landscapes, an incredible culinary scene, world-class beaches and some of the most fascinating wildlife in the world. It boasts cosmopolitan cities and expanses of untamed wilderness, as well as adventure, relaxation and plenty of sunshine. In short, South Africa has everything you could possibly want from a holiday destination. Here are some of the best experiences in South Africa, which will offer you an authentic flavour of this increasingly popular country.
Wine route in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is an area of the Western Cape, near Cape Town, known for its wine production and spectacular scenery. Surrounded by mountains, Stellenbosch is home to hundreds of wineries producing some of the country’s finest wines. There are a number of predetermined routes that you can follow around the region, or you can make your own way between sights. One of the best wineries to visit is Spier, where you can have eagle encounters, hang out in treetop huts and enjoy a picnic on their enormous grounds.
Try something new
South African cuisine relies heavily on one ingredient: meat. Commonly grilled on a braai (Afrikaans for barbecue), boerewors (translated to ‘farmer’s sausage’) is the star of the show, but is often accompanied by game meat such as ostrich, crocodile and springbok. Continuing the meat theme, biltong (dried meat like jerky) is another national favourite. For those with more of a sweet tooth, the deep fried koeksister that practically drips sugary syrup is an indulgent ending to any South African meal.
Apartheid museum in Soweto
South Africa is a wonderful country, but its history hasn’t always been easy. The Apartheid museum in Soweto, Johannesburg’s South Western Township, takes visitors through a journey that tells the story of Apartheid’s rise and ultimate demise. The architecture of the museum building is based on the prison on Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment before becoming the President of South Africa.
Covering an area larger than the country of Fiji, Kruger National Park is a game reserve in the North-East of South Africa where you can try to spot the big five: rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, leopard, lion and African elephant. Guided tours are available, but Kruger Park is a great place to try a self-drive safari, where you can set your own pace and stay as long as you like in any location. Because the park is so huge, it’s not overcrowded which means you can spot African animals in their habitat in peace. Just don’t get too close – they are wild animals after all!
Game, golf and gambling at Sun City
This resort in the North West province of South Africa offers visitors a unique experience with something to satisfy everyone. Sun City offers musical entertainment, a water park, a casino, safari parks, cultural experiences, kids’ activities and much, much more. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious place to indulge and relax for a few days or somewhere to try as many activities as possible, Sun City won’t disappoint.
