Experience Sydney at its Most Vivid

February 29, 2016 by Phil Murray

Sydney is gearing up to trip the light fantastic once again as this year’s Vivid festival promises to be bigger and brighter than ever.

Transforming the city’s most iconic buildings into an outdoor gallery of colourful canvases, this magical festival of light and music will run for five more days than previous years, giving you plenty of time to immerse yourself in the celebrated creative displays.

Lighting up the wild

Vivid Sydney is the work of a collaboration of artists from around Australia and the world – including local and international music acts that will be performing at large and small venues dotted around the city.

The innovative light installations range in size from playful projections on the vast sails of the Sydney Opera House to smaller scale artworks that make people part of the show.

Last year’s festival goers got to choose between seeing their own dance moves projected in light or using an interactive dashboard that controlled the colour and pattern of the lights dancing across the harbour buildings.

This year, you should venture to Taronga Zoo – onboard an illuminated ferry, no less – for some of the largest and most technologically-advanced light sculptures ever to feature in Vivid Sydney. To mark its centenary celebrations, the zoo will play host to 10 giant multimedia animal lanterns. With interactive lighting and sound effects, not to mention moving parts, the sculptures will represent 10 critical species from Australia and Sumatra that Taronga is committed to protecting.

Dancing in the sky

If you’re worried about timings, it’s certainly not too late to book your flights to Australia to marvel at this visual spectacular. The festival runs from 27th May to 18th June 2016. Flights that will get you there in time to enjoy Vivid Sydney start from £569pp return. You can also ask your Airfare Expert about upgrade options – Premium Economy starts from £1,289pp – and they’ll happily book you a harbour dinner cruise or a scenic helicopter trip, so you can enjoy the festival from land, sea and air. If you have a head for heights, you can don an illuminated vest for your Vivid BridgeClimb and channel your inner John Travolta on the flashing dance floor atop Sydney Harbour Bridge.

About Phil Murray

With parents in the travel industry, I was pretty much born with one of those take-off sweets in my mouth. I’m very fortunate to be close to clocking up my 50th country - not that I’ll slow down after that. No matter how many places I visit, I don’t think the excitement that comes with boarding a plane will ever wear off. Flying, for me, is one of the most extraordinary things we get to do as human beings and I’ll always be first in line for that window seat!
