Announcing our Charity of the Year, 2012–2013: Make-A-Wish Foundation

November 27, 2012 by Flight Centre UK

Each year Flight Centre UK nominates a charity to support. By focusing our fundraising activities in this way we believe we can raise enough money to truly make a difference.

Following yesterday’s announcement that we raised £102,200 for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2011 – 2012, we are pleased to announce our Charity of the Year 2012 – 2013 is Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK.

Make-A-Wish Foundation

We’ve set ourselves a target to raise £100,000 for Make-A-Wish, an amount that would enable them to grand 25 wishes to some very brave and deserving children.

Since it was formed in 1986, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 8,100 wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions. The charity’s dedicated team of wishgranters work to turn wishes into reality – whether it’s a wish to be a train driver for a day, a fashion designer, to meet a favourite celebrity, or to spend some time away from home with their family.

Six-year-old Charlie Hook had his wish granted by Make-A-Wish.  Diagnosed with widespread cancer on his fifth birthday, Charlie managed his treatment in true hero style, skateboarding on his drip stand while having IV chemo. Charlie wished to have a Spiderman-themed big boy’s bedroom. Thanks to donations, Make-A-Wish granted his wish and transformed his bedroom into Spiderman’s lair, complete with a bunk bed – Charlie’s favourite thing about it.

Flight Centre staff across the country will be joining forces to raise funds to grant wishes just like Charlie’s. We’ll be holding in-store events, raffles and prize draws, cake sales, dress-up and dress-down days and even running marathons.

Flight Centre Group UK Managing Director Chris Galanty said, ‘Make-A-Wish really resonated with voters and following a raffle at our annual Christmas Conference at the weekend, the company has already raised £5,120. We’re looking forward to working closely with Make-A-Wish and aiming to reach a target of £100,000 in 2013.’

Amanda Williams, Director of Fundraising at Make-A-Wish said, ‘Each year more and more children turn to us to have their magical wish granted so we are thrilled that Make-A-Wish is Flight Centre Group UK’s chosen charity for 2012-13 – the support really is invaluable.’

If you’d like to join in our efforts to make a child’s wish come true, you can donate via our JustGiving page, or donate in store when you book a holiday. Here’s to smashing our £100,000 target!
