Cereal Cafes are Popping Up All Over the World

Japan has always had them, America was quick to follow suit, then Singapore, London and now Melbourne. Much to everyone’s amusement/excitement/amazement cereal cafes are slowly but surely popping up all over the world. So is it a dining fad? Or just a way for travellers around the world to get their Frosty Flakes fix? You be the judge.

Cereal Killer Café in London

London’s first cereal only café caused a huge stir when it opened in Shoreditch late last year (pictured above). More of a place to relive your childhood through a bowl of cereal, than an actual serious café experience, the cleverly named Cereal Killer Café stocks over 120 different types of cereal from around the world, as well as 30 different varieties of milk and 20 different toppings.

Cereality, Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, Texas

Cereality in Dallas, Texas serves up cereal concoctions similar to a smoothie bar. Order the ‘Health Kick’ and you’ll be served a bowl of Cheerios, Special K, dried cranberries and walnuts. On the opposite side of the calorie scale, the PB&B Crunch is an indulgent blend of Reese’s Puffs, Cap’n Crunch, bananas and chocolate Syrup. So all in all it’s much more than the typical bowl of Shreadies you’d do up home, and an appealing option when it comes to airport dining.

Mix N Munch, Los Angeles

A cereal bar and grilled cheese café in one, Mix n Munch is more of a breakfast place with an emphasis on cereal, rather than being a cereal purist. Never the less, buy a bowl at this Pasadena café and you’ll have 25 cereals to choose from, with mix-ins also available if you like to mix things up.

The Cereal Pantry, Singapore

Catering to the city’s big expat community, the Cereal Pantry in Singapore is the place to get your cereal fix. On the menu you’ll find a huge variety of brands from classic Corn Flakes to Lucky Charms and Australian favourite Nutri-Grain. You won’t find any crazy concoctions or desert-style cereal blends here, but there are mix ins and fruit available so you can enjoy your Froot Loops just the way you like them.

Oatmeals, New York

Ok so technically oatmeal, what we like to call porridge, is not cereal, but it is a similarly beloved breakfast food. The passion of oatmeal is so strong in New York in fact, that there is a restaurant dedicated to the warm and wholesome meal. On the menu are creative concoctions like Topical Sunrise with fresh pineapple, dried mango, toasted coconut and coconut milk, and Bacon Pumpkin, with pumpkin puree, bacon, maple syrup and sea salt. For truly adventurous oatmeal lovers, opt for the Thai Style Sweet & Spice bowl with pineapple, coconut flakes, peanuts, peanut butter and Sriracha hot sauce.

The love for porridge in London is just as strong with a new porridge only cafe set to open in London in March. It’s name? Porridge Cafe of course. 

Cereal Anytime, Melbourne

Australia’s first cereal café recently opened in Melbourne to much hype. Similar to the cereal cafes in America, Cereal Anytime will serve all the signatures; Coco Pops, Weet-Bix and Cheerios. Where it differs though is there are no chocolate syrup mix-ins (fruit is available). Instead the café aims to educate their customers on what they are consuming, as well as portion control. Ironically there are Pop Tarts on the menu too, but you won’t hear me complaining.
