We’ve been on a tour of the world reading through all your entries into our competition to win an LA to the Bay tour with Contiki. You’ve taken us on a Banksy tour of Bristol, on historical walks through York, to the best bakeries of Belgium and through the gardens of Malaysia.
We especially loved your use of rhyme, tours that took us through the alphabet and those that revealed where to find the best breakfasts. A special thanks to everyone who invited us round to their mum’s for dinner – our stomachs are grumbling already.
Alas, we could only choose one winner – who’ll receive a place for them and a friend on an LA to the Bay tour with Contiki. Kicking off in Los Angeles, the tour takes in the wonders of the Grand Canyon, the dazzling lights of Las Vegas strip and the beauty of Yosemite National Park before finishing in the city by the bay, San Francisco.
And the winner is….
Victoria’s tour took us on a fun-filled night out in Cabarete in the Dominican Republic – including some precarious transport and a party at a petrol station!
To show a friend the best of Cabarete in the Dominican Republic, I would make sure they arrived during Semana Santa, the celebrations that take place over the Easter weekend. I’d pick them up from the airport in the ‘Bone Shaker’, a traditional, beaten-up British Land Rover held together with some very untraditional replacement parts, and we’d drive the twenty minutes back to Cabarete. Through the gaps in the palm trees that line the route, neon-bright kites can be seen pulling their kitesurfing riders along in the strong afternoon winds that have made Cabarete a mecca for water sports enthusiasts.
We’d drop the bags off in our studio at Villa Tatjana, and the owner, Roberto will machete a couple of coconuts from the tree for us to drink from as we watch Feedback, the cat who grew up without a mamma, look confused as a gecko runs past his paws. He knows he’s supposed to do something with it, but there’s just white noise where the hunting lessons should be.
Soon, we’ll hear music drifting from town and we’ll flag down a Motoconcho; a motorcycle taxi. The main street will be a beeping, honking, boom-boxing standstill, with Dominicans and some adventurous tourists crammed into and onto pick-up trucks, driving past the beach bars and straight to La Bomba – the petrol station, the home of the best parties. We’ll drink Presidente and Cuba Libres out of polystyrene cups and dance and eat chicken off an oil drum barbeque. We’ll realise it’s getting late when Motochoncos pass by carrying surfers and their surfboards down to Encuentro Beach and we’ll flag down our own ride to take us to the sea so we can watch the sun come up and the clear our muggy heads in the cool water.
Congratulations Victoria! You and a friend will be exploring the best of west coast USA with Contiki. We’re sure the Contiki team will make it an experience you’ll never forget.
Thanks again to everyone who entered and if you’d like to find out how you too can get your backstage pass to the USA with Contiki and Trafalgar Holidays, visit our website.
