Safety

Colombo is not especially dangerous. Violence towards foreigners is extremely rare and most visitors encounter no problems. Terrorist bombings that once rocked the city during the Sri Lankan Civil War are a thing of the past. Nevertheless, ask if you're unsure about an area. Never wear valuable jewelry or anything to broadcast your wealth. Single women should take care at night, and couples should avoid walking on lonely beaches after dark. Watch out for pickpockets on public transport. Keep valuables in a money belt under your clothes, or store them in your hotel safe. Be wary of touts and con artists around Fort Train Station and Galle Face Green, who may strike up a conversation with you, and then ask for a donation for a bogus cause, such as a school or charity.
