Barossa Historical Museum

The Barossa Historical Museum is fittingly housed in one of the most historic buildings in South Australia, the beautifully restored post office which dates back to 1865. In order to save it from demolition this historic gem was purchased by the Barossa Valley Archives and Historical Trust in 1972.

Originally used as Tanunda’s Post and Telegraph building, the museum is today a treasured repository of artefacts and records highlighting the area’s rich German heritage. Just some of the items on display include historic church furniture with German inscriptions, a rare organ by J.C.A. Kruger from 1863 and built in the typical German style of the time, and traditional clothing, tools and pottery.

The fine pieces housed in the museum reflect the past as well as the present. The German heritage lives on and the same drive for excellence can be seen today throughout the Barossa, displayed in its quality foods, wine, produce and hand-made goods.

The Barossa Museum is located in Tanunda in the heart of the Barossa Wine Region and sits along the Heysen Walking Trail and Tanunda Loop Walk and the inviting town in perfect for a leisurely stroll.
