Although most overseas trips do go without a hitch, you never know what might happen whilst you’re away.
Many of the most common problems can be prevented or made less stressful by taking a few simple precautions, so it makes sense to spend a little time getting prepared before you travel to save yourself a lot of worry later on.
With this in mind, we are working with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to help British nationals stay safe abroad. The FCO website (www.fco.gov.uk/travel) offers straightforward travel advice, top tips and up to date country information to help you plan your holiday.
Get travel insurance
Make sure you take out comprehensive travel insurance. If you have taken out a policy, check that it covers everything you want to do and make sure you have declared any pre-existing medical conditions.
If travelling in Europe, get a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). You can apply online or find out further information by visiting www.dh.gov.uk/travellers (NB you will still need travel insurance).
Check if you need vaccinations
Visit www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk to find out what vaccinations you might need or ask your GP. If you’re already on medication make sure you have enough to last you for your trip, and take a copy of your prescription just in case.
Get your documents in order
Check your passport will be valid for at least six months after the date of your return.
Make photocopies of your passport, tickets and insurance documents, or store online copies on a secure data storage site.
Find out now how your traveller’s cheques and credit cards can be replaced if lost and take emergency numbers with you.
Research your destination
For the most up to date travel advice and country specific information check the FCO website at www.fco.gov.uk/travel or call the travel advice helpline on 0845 850 28 29.
Tell others your itinerary
Register online with the LOCATE service so that the British Embassy can find you in case of an emergency. Go to www.fco.gov.uk/locate. Also make sure you tell family and friends where you’re going.
