3. Avoid the tourist restaurants in Fisherman's Wharf, especially at weekends; dine at a local restaurant in one the suburbs such as North Beach.

4. Extend your stay in Northern California and travel up to the wine areas of Nape and Sonoma, which is only a few hours drive from San Francisco.
