About Mauritius
The lively yet relaxed island of Mauritius is a versatile destination that offers something for everyone. Its population of over a million is an eclectic mix of Europeans, Chinese, Hindus, Muslims and Creoles, giving Mauritius an exotic pot-pourri of languages, cultures and cuisine unlike anywhere else.
With 330 kilometres of coastline almost entirely fringed by coral reefs, Mauritius is an ideal destination for snorkelling and diving, as well as a host of other water sports including deep-sea fishing, windsurfing and sailing. There are also plenty of on-land experiences to tempt visitors, including the excellent botanical gardens. The island also boasts numerous golf courses, stunning mountain walks and lively markets.
The north coast of the island houses the village of Grand Baie, a bustling spot with plenty of restaurants, shops and nightlife. Turtle Bay and Balaclava are hugely popular destinations with plenty of stunning resort hotels. In the east resorts tend to be more isolated and spread out, with beaches ideal for windsurfing and sailing. The island’s west coast is comprised of stretches of white sand, calm tropical bays and indigenous forest.
