About Flights to Melbourne Australia

Whether you book your flights from London to Melbourne or choose to depart from other destinations, flying from the UK to Australia is definitely long-haul. Flights take approximately 21 hours or more from London, with a stopover in between. Depending on the airline, stopovers usually take place in Asia or the United Arab Emirates, with popular hubs including Dubai, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. All international flights to Melbourne disembark at Melbourne Airport, also known as Tullamarine Airport. As the second busiest airport in Australia, Melbourne Airport spans three terminals and experiences over 22 million passengers each year. Flights from Melbourne to London are also likely to leave from here.

Airlines that fly from the UK to Melbourne include:

Airport Transfers

Melbourne Airport is located off the Tullamarine freeway around 23 kilometres from the CBD. Transport available from the airport includes a designated bus called the SkyBus, taxis and hire car. The cheapest way to travel from the airport is via the 24 hour SkyBus which runs every 10 minutes from the airport to Southern Cross Station in the city. If you prefer to travel by taxi expect to pay around £27 or more, depending on the time of day and location of your Melbourne accommodation. Hiring a car is also an option with car hire desks from the world’s major chains located in the airport’s domestic terminal.

Useful Information

British passport holders looking to holiday in Australia for 3 months or under will need to apply for an eVisitor visa or ETA prior to their cheap Melbourne flights. To find out the difference between the two and which visa is best for you, talk to your Flight Centre consultant - they may also be able to arrange one for you. Before boarding flights to Melbourne, take some time to exchange some pounds into Australian Dollars to have with you when you arrive. The exchange rate between the dollar and pound fluctuates constantly so keep an eye on the market and make your purchase when a good exchange rate is available.

Getting Around Melbourne

One of the best ways to get around Melbourne is also the most iconic - the tram. Servicing much of the central area as well as popular suburbs, taking the tram is both an easy and scenic way to see Melbourne. Before boarding the train you can purchase your ticket for any local 7/11 or convenience store or from the machines on board - although keep in mind these machines only take coins. For where the trams don’t go, public buses and trains are also an option, particularly for the outer suburbs and outside the city. If you’re going to be catching the trams or public buses and trains frequently, it may be more cost effective to buy a myki card from a train station or local store that has a myki sign. While Melbourne is a fantastic city for exploring on foot (and tram when your feet are tired), you may want to consider hiring a car to explore the nearby coast and hinterland.

Top Melbourne Attractions

With a zest for events, dining and shopping, Melbourne is a city where the best attractions are the ones you discover for yourself. A city of hidden laneways and unassuming shopping malls, rooftop bars, graffiti art and hole-in-the-wall cafes, Melbourne lends itself to getting lost. In fact, not knowing where you are going is the best way to explore the city. For specific attractions though, some of the city’s standouts include the Crown Casino at Southbank, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the Queen Victoria Market and Luna Park, located at the popular coastal area of St Kilda.
